Southeast Louisiana Hospital to be run by Florida company | NOLA ...

A Florida-based health care company will assume operation of Southeast Louisiana Hospital near Mandeville, a state mental health facility that has been fixture on the north shore for 60 years. In November, the state Department of Health and Hospitals selected Meridian Behavioral Health Service of Gainesville as its favorite to take over SELH, whose announced closure last summer triggered a wave of opposition from local officials, hospital staff members and patients' families.

With the private company part of the equation, St. Tammany Parish government and DHH have been working on cooperative endeavor agreements with Meridian with the goal of keeping psychiatric beds on the hospital's campus on U.S. 190 east of Mandeville.

On Monday, state Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Mandeville, DHH Secretary Bruce Greenstein, St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister, Meridian Behavioral Healthcare CEO Wesley Mason and other state and local officials met at the St. Tammany Parish Council chambers to sign the agreement.

Under the plan, the state gives St. Tammany Parish the authority to manage all property at Southeast and has signed an agreement for Meridian to operate 58 psychiatric inpatient beds: 42 for youths and 16 for adults. A separate agreement between the parish and Meridian allows the health care company to operate the 58 beds on the Southeast campus.

"This is a solution that continues to provide necessary services to this parish and the north shore, as well as keeps hundreds of jobs in this community,"Brister said. "This is a great thing for St. Tammany Parish,?but in the end the parients and families of those that desperately need those services will benfit?most."

The agreements also allow the current outpatient and group home services providers on the campus to remain in place.

Meridian will give hiring preferences to current Southeast employees where comparable jobs are available.

Catching many local officials by surprise, DHH announced in July that it would close the hospital, which had 94 in-patient beds earlier this year. DHH officials believe the closure will save $1.6 million this fiscal year and $3.5 million in subsequent years as the state struggles to cope with reductions in federal money for Medicare.

The state health department says it wants to ensure a sustainable behavioral care system for the future by de-emphasizing the role of large public institutions and instead building partnerships with community providers.

The shuttering of the hospital unleashed a wave of opposition from employees, families of patients and others who dreaded the loss of mental health facilities in the region. The immediate formation of the Committee to Save Southeast Louisiana Hospital helped stoke the issue by holding public rallies at the hospital and at the business offices of local legislators.

The group lobbied unsuccessfully for a special session of the Legislature to address significant budget cuts made by Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration to the state's health care system. Committee members have said privatizing the hospital is better than shutting it down, but they would prefer that it remain a public institution. They raised concerns that for-profit companies might be too focused on revenues and might be inclined to turn away patients who need long-term care.

Technique for observing 'mechanochemical' synthesis could boost green chemistry

Bulk solvents, widely used in the chemical industry, pose a serious threat to human health and the environment. As a result, there is growing interest in avoiding their use by relying on "mechanochemistry" an energy-efficient alternative that uses high-frequency milling to drive reactions. Because milling involves the intense impact of steel balls in rapidly moving jars, however, the underlying chemistry is difficult to observe.

Now, for the first time, scientists have studied a milling reaction in real time, using highly penetrating X-rays to observe the surprisingly rapid transformations as the mill mixed, ground, and transformed simple ingredients into a complex product. This research, reported Dec. 2 in Nature Chemistry, promises to advance scientists' understanding of processes central to the pharmaceutical, metallurgical, cement and mineral industries and could open new opportunities in "green chemistry" and environmentally friendly chemical synthesis.

The international team of researchers was led by Tomislav Fri?i? of McGill University in collaboration with Ivan Halasz from the University of Zagreb in Croatia, and scientists from the University of Cambridge, the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany, and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France.

While mechanical action can break chemical bonds -- for example, in the wear and tear of textile fibers -- mechanical force can also be used to synthesize new chemical compounds and materials. In recent years, ball milling has become increasingly popular in the production of highly complex chemical structures. In such synthesis, steel balls are shaken with the reactants and catalysts in a rapidly vibrating jar. Chemical transformations take place at the sites of ball collision, where impact causes instant "hot spots" of localized heat and pressure. This is difficult to model and, without access to real time reaction monitoring, mechanochemistry remained poorly understood.

"When we set out to study these reactions, the challenge was to observe the entire reaction without disturbing it, in particular the short-lived intermediates that appear and disappear under continuous impact in less than a minute", says Fri?i?, an assistant professor in McGill's Department of Chemistry.

The team of scientists chose to study mechanochemical production of the metal-organic framework ZIF-8 from the simplest and non-toxic components. Materials such as ZIF-8 are rapidly gaining popularity for their ability to capture large amounts of CO2; if manufactured cheaply and sustainably, they could become widely used for carbon capture and storage, catalysis and even hydrogen storage.

"The team came to the ESRF because of our high-energy X-rays capable of penetrating 3 mm thick walls of a rapidly moving reaction jar made of steel, aluminium or plastic. The X-ray beam must get inside the jar to probe the mechanochemical formation of ZIF-8, and then out again to detect the changes as they happened", says Simon Kimber, a scientist at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, who is a member of the team. This unprecedented methodology enabled the real-time observation of reaction kinetics, reaction intermediates and the development of their respective nanoparticles.

In principle, this technique could be used to study all types of chemical reactions in a ball mill, and optimize them for processing in a range of industries. "That would translate into good news for the environment, for industry -- and for consumers," Fri?i? says.

The researchers in the team were supported by the Herchel Smith Fund, the British Council/DAAD, ESRF Grenoble, NanoDTC, the University of Cambridge, the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, McGill University and the FRQNT Centre for Green Chemistry and Catalysis.

Nick Fouriezos: Script on Murray to Be Determined by Championship Play

When No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia take the field for the SEC Championship game Saturday, the noise will be deafening. But the uproar has already begun, with a swarm of coverage that has transformed a conference championship into a playoff for the national title.

Forget the reemergence of Notre Dame as one of the nation's elite programs, something that would normally dominate the college football landscape. For this week anyway, all eyes will be turned on the Georgia Dome, and rightly so -- the winner will be riding a streak of six consecutive national championships for the conference. The victor will probably be the favorite in the national title, despite the Fighting Irish's vaunted defense and unblemished 12-0 record.

If Georgia is that team, it will be due to a number of factors: the coaching of Mark Richt, the play of the defense led by All-American Jarvis Jones and the efforts of two freshmen running backs who have fans screaming, "Gurshall." But amidst the myriad of storylines for Georgia's season, the play of Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray exceeds them all.

The junior's story is well-known by now. His career has been marked by brilliant statistics, then discredited by inopportune losses. Murray has already shattered the school record books, and has now moved on to the conference marks. He leads the nation in passer efficiency and holds school records for single-season touchdowns (35) and overall touchdowns (89).

But Murray has also been plagued by a 3-9 record against ranked opponents and the unshakeable notion that he can't win the proverbial "big game." Those first two victories over ranked opponents came against No. 24 Auburn and No. 25 Georgia Tech last season, and the third came in a 17-9 victory over No. 2 Florida earlier this year. But though Murray passed for the game-winning touchdown against the Gators, he also threw three interceptions and completed only 50 percent of his passes.

Murray will be the second Georgia quarterback to play in back-to-back SEC titles, after David Greene accomplished the same feat from 2002-2003. If he can win one, he would join rare company for Georgia, which has won two SEC Championship games, in 2002 and 2005. If he wins the national title, his victories would finally match his statistics in declaring him the best quarterback in Georgia history.

His work can easily be erased though -- a loss would cause a freefall for Georgia's ranking and its bowl hopes. Murray, even with an inspiring performance, would go down as the quarterback who couldn't win.

Murray asked for permission to be excused from media interviews this week. There was nothing controversial about doing so, though it was surprising, since he had never refused weekly interviews in his three years as a starter. But the message was clear: no distractions. The given reason was that he wanted to have as much time to prepare against Alabama.

With the amount of noise surrounding this game, it's no wonder. The weight of storylines yet to be written has to be crushing, when Murray's history could go from one extreme to the next. With one result, he would be dubbed a champion; with the other, a disappointment.

And, in a sport which deifies the starting quarterback's ability to influence games, only the scoreboard will close the book on Murray's legacy.

Gurley crucial to Georgia's success against Alabama

Todd Gurley has been the revelation that the Bulldogs sorely needed at the tailback position this season.

But if they are to go where they hope, Gurley will need to be a playmaker against No. 2 Alabama in the SEC Championship game Saturday.

It's the natural progression for a running back that burst into the scene in No. 3 Georgia's first game of the season, rushing for two touchdowns and scoring a 100-yard kickoff return to boot. Reach the SEC Championship game? That was expected. But now the hard part -- winning -- will be dependent on whether Georgia's most prominent addition can make a difference.

Gurley runs like a much smaller man, boasting top-level track speed despite being taller than most running backs. He has runs of 55, 51 and 49 yards on the season, bolstering his reputation as a break-away threat. But it will be his size -- all 6-foot-1, 218 pounds of it --which will prove crucial for No. 3 Georgia's chances of upturning Alabama as the top team in the conference.

It's not that Gurley will need to break a big run. Alabama simply won't allow that, with the defense holding conference opponents to 2.4 rushing yards per carry, on average. In fact, the Crimson Tide hasn't allowed a rush longer than 32 yards all season.

But Gurley, who leads conference running backs with 1,138 yards and 14 touchdowns, can make this game competitive for Georgia simply with his yards after contact. The Alabama defense, which often dominates the line of scrimmage, will hit Gurley early and often. But if he can manage to squeeze through a few yards after the hit, the line will soften.

The Georgia offense will be placed in more favorable second and third down situations. The Bulldogs could maintain the semblance of balance required to get receivers open downfield and quarterback Aaron Murray, who leads the nation in passing efficiency, would receive the extra time required to complete those passes.

This isn't news for the Georgia offense -- offensive coordinator Mike Bobo maintains a strict balance in order to strike this very chord. The blueprint to winning against Alabama has already been given to Georgia in the form of its earlier matchup against then-No. 2 Florida, a 17-9 victory that came partly as a result of the Bulldogs' suffocating defense.

But the overlooked performance of Todd Gurley in that game could be the difference against the Crimson Tide. Gurley ran for 118 yards on 27 carries against the Gators, with most of the yards mirroring the grind-it-out variety, rather than the bigger gains he has been known for.

His longest run was for 23 yards, but it was Gurley's ability to add extra yards that allowed Georgia to gain 14 first downs, despite only going 1-for-10 on third downs and having three turnovers.

If Gurley can reproduce that type of performance, the Bulldogs may have a chance to win a conference championship. And the freshman running back so readily compared to Georgia legend Herschel Walker would be poised to bring the Bulldogs a championship of his own.

FemFusion information for locals? | FemFusion Fitness

First, happy Friday! I apologize that this post is only for a portion of my readers? It primarily pertains to those who live in my local area (Kaiserslautern, Germany). I want to clarify some recent changes just in case there are any questions!

1) Last Wednesday (November 28th) was my FINAL group fitness class at the Landstuhl Fitness Center. As I discussed in my post about inner awareness, I am eliminating this class to free up some time so that I can ?get back to my clinical roots? as a women?s health physical therapist. So instead of teaching my Wednesday FemFusion class at Landstuhl, I will now be seeing clients for private fitness instruction and women?s health physical therapy services at the American Rehab and Urgent Care clinic in Landstuhl. Email me?if you would like to know more about the women?s health PT services I will offer, and click here for an article that details ?what to expect??if?you are referred to a women?s health PT for issues related to pelvic floor dysfunction.

2) The new group fitness schedule can be seen by clicking here. This is the current version, and I don?t anticipate any more changes in the near future. The nutshell version is that FemFusion classes will continue to be held Tuesdays at 10:50 at Southside, and Fridays at 10:15 at Grace Studio. As always, please keep posted to my Facebook page, where I post important and/or last-minute news such as unexpected class cancellations or substitute teachers. For instance, Teresa is subbing for me today due to a surprise invitation to a very special event that I just couldn?t miss? And I posted the info on Facebook. Sadly, you will probably have navigate to my Facebook page yourself? Due to the changes Facebook has made recently, it?s very rare for news from business pages (like mine) to show up in your personal news feed. So please add my page to one of your ?interest groups? or just pop on over before you come to class!

3) I have a SPECIAL WORKSHOP FOR TEEN GIRLS coming up on December 28th that I?m excited to tell you about? I?ll share the news next week! Stay tuned!

4) One of the best ways to keep in touch ? since Facebook is no longer the best news distributor for pages and since you may not always catch the latest blog posts ? is to SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER. See that box in the upper right-hand corner? Put your info there. I?ll fill you in on all of the BIG news in my monthly e-newsletters? You?ll be the first to know about major changes to the class schedule, updates about the women?s fitness + yoga website that is currently in development, etc? So please do stay in touch that way as well.

Have a great weekend!

One of my favorite pictures from last Christmas season!

New design for iron flow battery would enhance energy and economic security

CLEVELAND -- A Department of Energy agency that funds high-risk, high-payoff research, has awarded engineers at Case Western Reserve University $567,805 to develop a "rustbelt" battery with unprecedented flexibility and utility.

For more than year, the Cleveland-based researchers have been investigating ways to build a flow battery primarily using water and iron, hence the name. A flow battery is essentially an unwrapped battery that can be scaled up to hold and supply electricity to a home or an entire community.

In addition to using cheap, plentiful and environmentally friendly materials, the battery is designed to improve the efficiency of the power grid and accelerate the addition of solar and wind power supplies.

The project was one of 66 funded by DOE's Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy in the round of awards announced this week, federal officials said. The battery would enhance the nation's economic and energy security and help ensure that the U.S. maintains a technological lead in developing and deploying advanced energy technologies two of ARPA-E's goals.

The key is a new battery architecture that enables greater energy storage capacity while permitting greater power density.

"You can use the analogy of a car engine," said Robert Savinell, professor of chemical engineering and the project leader. "If you need more horsepower, you need a bigger engine, but the range is limited by the gas tank. To add more range, you add another gas tank."

The researchers plan to add another tank and some new technology to take advantage of the added storage space in their iron flow battery.

The design would enable them to increase the power density, which in turn drives down the cost of operation. At the same time, the new design eliminates the problem of decreased battery discharge time. Think again of the car: an engine delivering 400 horsepower will go through 4 gallons of fuel faster than the same engine delivering 200 horsepower.

By extending the discharge time as needed, the battery would be more useful for a broader range of applications, including storing energy from wind turbines and solar panels and supplying energy when wind wanes and the sun sets. This version of the rustbelt battery could be integrated into a smart grid--charging up when use is low, then adding electricity when demand is high--for industrial and home energy supplies and more.

Due to its flexibility, this new design could be a useful alternative to current storage technologies, such as pumped hydro and compressed air systems, which require large water supplies and land with mixed elevations, or access to airtight caverns.

When demand is low, pumped hydro stations use excess electricity to pump water from a river or reservoir to a reservoir at a higher elevation. When demand rises, the water is released downhill through turbines that produce electricity. Compressed air stations pump air into caverns when demand is low then release the compressed air through gas turbines to produce electricity at high efficiency as demand increases.

The batteries, which can be placed almost anywhere, could also replace "peak power plants" which suppliers turn on, burning fossil fuels or biomaterial to produce power when peak demands exceed the available energy on the grid. The batteries could thereby reduce emissions.

In standard batteries, power and energy densities are limited by wrapping all the materials used to convert chemical energy to electrical energy inside a single cell. The electrodes, which are part of the fuel, are consumed over time, leading to performance loss.

In flow batteries, chemical reactants used to produce electrical energy are stored in two tanks and the electrodes, which are not used as fuel, are housed in a separate chamber. Reactants are pumped through the cell stack and electrons are delivered in one direction to charge the battery and the other direction to discharge the system.

This new battery would exchange the conventional solid electrode in the negative half of the battery cell with a slurry that can be used to help convert chemical energy to electrical and vice-versa. As much slurry as needed can be pumped through the negative chamber and stored in a separate tank. The volume stored determines energy storage capacity, independent of the power density, or, back to the car, how hard you're driving.

"Instead of being limited by the constraints of a traditional electrode and chamber to providing a kilowatt for an hour, the slurry can be pumped in from another tank and enable you to provide a kilowatt for an hour, or two or 10 or 10s of hours," Savinell said

Savinell is working with Jesse Wainright, a fellow chemical engineering professor at Case School of Engineering, and Mirko F. Antloga, director of the university's Electrochemical Engineering and Energy Laboratory.

Their goal is to devise a slurry that enables the battery to discharge at least 90 percent of the energy that it takes to charge and provide an energy storage efficiency of better than 77 percent.

The researchers say the need is growing rapidly and point to studies that forecast the market for grid-level storage will exceed $228 billion over the next decade.

The most common flow batteries are based on vanadium, a metal mined primarily in Russia, China and South Africa. The form used in batteries has recently cost about $5 to $15 per pound. Iron is plentiful in the U.S. A form useful for a flow battery has recently been selling for less than 30 cents per pound.

Vanadium batteries use highly-corrosive sulfuric acid for the electrolyte. Because flow battery tanks can be the size of a freight train car or several of them, the researchers plan to use a benign electrolyte with a pH of about 4, for the safety of workers operating or maintaining them.

JPMorgan looks to Brazil government for business

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. I haven't led a perfect life either, and I have my own skeletons and things that I would never mention. But still, I can't get over this. ...

Scanadu unveils smartphone-enabled home diagnostics ...

scanadu SCOUTScanadu, the 2-year-old San Francisco startup aiming to develop a handheld medical scanner for home use, similar to the Star Trek tricorder, has unveiled its first three products, set for release by the end of 2013.

The Scanadu SCOUT is the central scanner component. The NASA Ames Research Center-based company says that customers simply hold the small, lightweight device to the patient?s temple and it will return five vital sign results with 99 percent accuracy in less than 10 seconds.

?Consumers? attention deficit is increasing,? CEO Walter de Brouwer told MobiHealthNews in an interview last month. ?And if they have a device that can do diagnostics, they are not willing to spend more than 10 seconds waiting. They?d like to have real time, they?ll settle for 10 seconds, but a minute would be too long.?

The data from the scan will be uploaded to a Scanadu app via Bluetooth and will track pulse transit time, heart rate, electrical heart activity, body temperature, heart rate variability, and blood oxygenation. The company plans to sell the device for less than $150, and the firmware will be remotely upgradable, allowing Scanadu to add new scanning metrics in the future.

?We found in user testing that the consumer doesn?t want to go through the ritual of the doctor checkup,? de Brouwer told MobiHealthNews. ?The consumer wants one position on the body. And he wants to do the diagnostics all in that one position. And the consumer is price-specific. For the consumer, the price sensitivity will be very high.?

In addition to the SCOUT, the company announced two ?low-cost and disposable early detection tools,? which will be integrated with the Scanadu app.

Project ScanaFlo will be used to conduct urinalysis. Customers can buy an over-the-counter disposable cartridge, and the software will test urine for preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, kidney failure and urinary tract infections. Pregnant women will also be able to scan for pregnancy complications or to monitor their health throughout the pregnancy.

Project ScanaFlu, meanwhile, will analyze saliva in cases of cold-like symptoms. It will test for Strep A, Influenza A and B, adenovirus, and RSV.

Scanadu plans to submit the products to the FDA for review as soon as next week. De Brouwer said that as a medical device with a consumer-focused use case, it?s not clear whether the FDA will consider the device unique. The SCOUT goes into manufacturing next month, freeing up the company?s team to work on the software side, particularly the user interface.

Scanadu also stressed in the announcement that Scanadu can be used by healthy customers, too, to monitor personal average vitals, so that when a person does get sick doctors have more information about what?s normal for that individual.

Dr. Alan Greene, Chief Medical Officer at Scanadu, said in a statement, ?Health decisions shouldn?t be based on averages, they should be based on a real, accurate and personalized healthfeed of data ? which we now have the power to give to the consumer in the palm of their hand.?

Scanadu is one of the more visible companies competing in the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize, a competition to develop a device much like this one. The announced vitals the SCOUT can read line up fairly closely with the draft guidelines for the prize, with the exception of respiratory rate. De Brouwer said the device can read respiratory rate, but not within Scanadu?s self-imposed 10-second window. He said a marketable consumer product is a higher priority than the prize, which is still a year out from its first judging round.

De Brouwer believes Scanadu will be just one step in a personal health revolution.

?This is the beginning of a nascent industry of personal healthcare and consumer health. The first time in my life I?ve seen this excitement was with the personal computer, the second time was with the Internet and now it?s about health,? de Brouwer said.

He said he wants this product to change the relationship consumers of health care have with providers, making consumers the keepers of their own health information.

?Now we treat doctors as accountants who have to keep records for us,? he said. ?They were not trained to do this. What they were trained to be was an analyst of data, to give us their point of view, their therapy.?

2012 Holiday Gift Guide: Elefun Snackin' Safari {Review} | Wee Share

Raileigh really enjoys playing board games.? We frequently have family game nights, and she will often request to play a game together before heading off to bed for the night.? Since Darren and I are board game lovers ourselves, we are usually happy to oblige her request.?

Recently, we have been playing Elefun Snackin' Safari.? This is a new addition to the Elefun and Friends line of games-- a collection that is made specifically with preschoolers in mind.

The game comes with 13 snack cards-- 6 orange, 6 green, and one golden tutti frutti snack cake card.? There are also 2 home base cards and 2 Snackin' Safari elephant heads, handles, and trunks {which you assemble together}.? The game is meant to be played by two players.

There are several ways to play Elefun Snackin' Safari.? ALL of them will get you up and moving.? This is one of my favorite aspects of the game, as there aren't many board games that require any real physical activity.

Our favorite way to play Elefun Snackin' Safari is really easy, actually.? You spread out all 13 of the snack cards randomly on the floor.? Put each of the home base cards on opposite sides of the room. ? Grab your elephant with his attached springy truck and go to home base, then start bouncing your elephant?s trunk on the snack cards to pick up a tasty snack! Once it?s caught, run back to home base and drop it off, then get back to the snackin? as quick as you can! Make a pile of snacks, and if your pile is the biggest at the end, you win!

In addition to this method of play, you can turn all the cards upside down and require players to look for cards of a certain color.? Or, you can go on a mission to find the special tutti frutti snack-- the first one to find it wins!

I really like that there are so many variations of game play.? It keeps the game interesting and exciting.? Though we tend to play our favorite version most often, it's also nice to mix things up a bit sometimes.

Now-- there is one thing that I don't love about the game.? I have a hard time with those Snackin' Safari elephant heads.? Meaning, no matter how hard or soft I spring them, it can be difficult to get them to stick onto the snack cards.? The suction is strong, so I think it's more of an issue with aim.? I just worry that if my aim isn't good enough, then most kids might have a problem with it as well.

Regardless, Raileigh LOVES this game.? She asks to play Elefun Snackin' Safari almost daily and enjoys collecting all the cute snack cards as we play.

Elefun Snackin' Safari is sure to be a hot item with preschoolers this year, so make sure to pick up your copy of this game for all the little ones in your life!

Connect with Hasbro so that you're always in-the-know about exciting new games and coupons.

Disclosure: I received no monetary compensation for this post. I received a complimentary product for the purposes of this review. All opinions are my own.

Target holiday tour across Canada heralds planned store openings

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario ? Target will sponsor a tour across Canada that will visit more than 20 communities ahead of the planned opening of its stores in the country, the mass-merchandise retailer said Tuesday.

The tour will start in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and conclude in British Columbia in the middle of December. Target plans to open 124 stores in Canada starting in March and April 2013.

"We are excited to be celebrating the holidays with Canadians from coast to coast," Target Canada director of marketing Livia Zufferli said. "We've planned surprises in more than 20 communities across the country in the hopes of creating unforgettable memories and giving Canadians a taste of what they can expect when Target opens in 2013."

Target purchased the leases for the Zellers store chain from the Hudson's Bay Co. in January 2011. Since then, it has worked to convert the stores to Target stores and also boosted its presence in Canada. On Nov. 6, the company announced it would sponsor a competition for up-and-coming Canadian fashion designers, and last week, it announced it would donate up to $1 million to Canadian charities through its Give With Target program.

It?s been a long while since William Caxton set up his first printing press in Westminster and provided a mechanism to help spread the written word that would eventually strike at the heart of Reformation England. Caxton?s invention in 1483 allowed for the mass production of printed matter which, in time challenged the authority of the established church, lead to the publication of?the King James Bible, and brought about the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.

Big Data

William Caxton, inventor of the printing press

Today, we are standing on the shoulders of this great giant.?As Caxton transformed important words into powerful messages through innovation in technology over 500 years ago, so we now must learn to do similar with big data ? that?collection of?data sets?so large and complex that it has become difficult to process using on-hand database management tools -?in the 21st century.

But, is the time right?

We?ve now had around 20 years of the commercial Internet with organisations embracing innovation to find new markets globally, provide a better service to their customers, simplify processes, and generally make life easier. The explosion of social media has made our personal and business relationships more interactive online, but we are faced with the enormity of information overkill that makes any informed decisions difficult.

How do we make sense of big data,?prioristise what?s important, value and secure it?

Start-ups are among those best placed to make the most of new technology, but they may be stopped in their tracks by more established players who will protect their own interests. Many small businesses will find it difficult to defend legal challenges to intellectual property rights or stop large corporate organisations from using IP laws to restrict consumer behaviour in particular markets.

Dealing with big data brings a whole plethora of legal problems such as intellectual property rights; interoperability; licensing; platforms and processing, and services out. Who is responsible for big data, is it accurate and will algorithms that drive the data be accessible or remain commercially sensitive? Can we anonymise data so that it doesn?t breach privacy and data protection rules?

A 2011?McKinsey?report?suggests suitable technologies include?A/B testing,?association rule learning,?classification, luster analysis,?crowd sourcing,data fusion?and?integration,?ensemble learning,?genetic algorithms,?machine learning, natural language processing,?neural networks,pattern recognition,?anomaly detection,?predictive modelling,?regression,?sentiment analysis,?signal processing,?supervised?and unsupervised learning,?simulation,?time series analysis?and?visualisation.

Additional technologies being applied to big data include massively parallel-processing (MPP) databases,?search-based applications, data-mining grids, distributed file systems, distributed databases, cloud computing platforms, the Internet, and scalable storage systems.

But whilst big data may be difficult to work with using relational databases and desktop statistics and visualization packages, requiring instead massively parallel software running on tens, hundreds, or even thousands of servers, let?s not forget the end game. Everything organisations do, irrespective of size or sector must be viable financially and serve the bottom line. Solutions therefore need to be scalable and reflect the value in the big data being collected.

Caxton?s simple printing press changed the world. We?ve just got to make it a smarter planet.

Cops eye anti-Semitic angle in Tottenham fan fight

By NICOLE WINFIELD

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:59 p.m. ET Nov. 22, 2012

ROME (AP) -Police are investigating whether anti-Semitism was behind a brutal attack early Thursday on Tottenham fans out drinking ahead of their team's Europa League match against Lazio. At least one person was stabbed and seven were taken to the hospital, police and witnesses said.

In an apparently well-organized assault, some 50 masked hooligans wielding cobblestones, metal bars and knives attacked the British fans and trashed the "The Drunken Ship" pub in Rome's Campo de' Fiori square, a popular drinking spot where Tottenham fans had gathered on the eve of the game.

Lazio fans were widely suspected, but the club said Thursday there was no proof its supporters were involved and the ANSA news agency reported that one supporter from crosstown rival AS Roma had been arrested. In a statement, Lazio noted that the hooligans' faces were covered, insisted that its fans had been behaving recently and called for a full investigation.

Tottenham supporters are often called the "Yid Army" and the team is known to have a large Jewish fan base from north London. Lazio fans are traditionally right-wing and often use fascist salutes and slogans. Witnesses said the hooligans shouted "Jew" during the attack.

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno called for tough justice for those responsible for what he called a "terrible and disgusting" attack. "The anti-Semitic hypothesis increases the seriousness of the aggression," he said in a statement.

Rome police say they detained some of the 50 or so attackers, but acknowledged many got away. Fifteen people were identified and searches were under way Thursday at their homes, police said in a statement.

Blood stained the cobblestones outside the bar, windows and mirrors were smashed and stools and tables were overturned.

"They penned them in the back and they threw everything at them: cobblestones, metal rods, metal bolts, pieces of belts," bar owner Marco Manzi told The Associated Press after returning to survey the damage Thursday morning.

He said the attack seemed well organized, with groups converging on the pub from two directions, their faces covered with motorcycle helmets and scarves, and armed with "every possible thing."

The brawl began sometime after 1 a.m. and was over within 20 minutes, Manzi said. Police said those hospitalized were British men, aged 20-60. One emerged from the hospital Thursday afternoon with a black eye and a bandaged head and foot.

Manzi claimed police were virtually absent from the brawl, though police disputed that and officials noted that pubs have their own private security. Often a police van or two is stationed just a few meters (yards) from "The Drunken Ship," since fights regularly break out in the piazza frequented at night by American exchange students, tourists and young Italians.

"There was a total absence of law enforcement," Manzi said.

He said after the brawl ended inside the pub, the attackers escaped and knifed another victim about 20 meters (yards) away, down a small cobblestone street.

Police said in their statement that their patrol units on duty in Campo de' Fiori alerted headquarters as soon as the fight broke out and that "all available patrols," an ambulance and police reinforcements were quickly sent.

Lazio said it hoped those responsible would be quickly identified so that its fans wouldn't be subject to "unjust" suspicions.

"Lazio fans have shown in recent times to have totally abandoned shows of cowardice and gratuitous physical violence," it said in a statement. "Episodes like what happened last night have nothing to do with football."
