(AP) ? In the supposed workers' paradise of North Korea, inequality is assigned at birth, a study

by a U.S.-based human rights group says.

Education, job, access to scarce food and health care, and even whom you marry all hinge on how loyal your forebears are viewed to have been to the Kim dynasty that took power six decades ago.

The study released Wednesday by the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea says all adults in the socialist state are categorized as one of three classes: loyal, wavering or hostile.

The nongovernment human rights group says it amounts to a caste system.

Despite the emergence of informal markets since the late 1990s challenging state control, the study says the class system persists and is behind the discrimination and abuses faced by the lowest echelons of the North's closed society.

"Throughout its 64-year existence, the Kim regime has claimed that North Korea is an egalitarian workers' paradise," said the committee's executive director, Greg Scarlatoiu. "Yet, inequality is assigned at birth, perpetuated throughout a person's lifetime and cruelly enforced by those in power to benefit themselves and their supporters."

Lee Sung-min, a North Korean defector living in Seoul, said in an interview with The Associated Press that because his late grandfather was accused of collaborating with the Japanese during the 35 years Japan ruled South Korea as a colony, his family was stigmatized by North Korean authorities and he was blocked from joining the Workers' Party or entering the school he wanted to attend.

"No one is free from songbun in North Korea," Lee said.

The North Korean government denies such a discriminatory class system exists.

The study, titled "Marked for Life," is based on interviews with 75 North Korean defectors, including as recently as 2011. It also cites a 1993 manual issued by North Korea's Ministry of Public Security to guide its officials on how to investigate a citizen's socio-political classification, or "songbun," which translates in Korean as "ingredients."

The ministry maintains a file on everyone from the age of 17 that is updated every two years, the study says.

Numerous defectors' interviews show that those who are young when they leave North Korea see songbun as decreasingly important, while older defectors say songbun still matters, the report said.

The songbun system has its origins in social class restructuring enforced by the North's communist founders, led by Kim Il Sung, that began even before the state's formal creation in 1948, to elevate peasants and laborers at the expense of landlords, businessmen and religious leaders.

Those considered most loyal had fought alongside Kim against Japanese colonialists and then against U.S.-backed forces in the 1950-53 Korean War. Those deemed hostile collaborated with the enemy or had family members who fled to South Korea.

Moving up a songbun category is rare and requires a lifetime of devotion to the Kim family regime and ruling Workers' Party of Korea. But songbun can be downgraded for political or criminal offenses or failing to cooperate with authorities.

When an individual is sentenced to the North's gulag of political prison camps ? estimated to hold 150,000-200,000 people ? family members are considered guilty by association and generally accompany them, the study says.

Today the loyal class, which makes up about a quarter of the 24 million population, still dominates the powerful military and the Workers' Party. They alone are entitled to live in the relatively prosperous capital Pyongyang and monopolize the prestige universities and best jobs, the study says.

Marrying someone with poor songbun likely would exclude that individual from party membership, causing severe consequences for employment opportunities and quality of life, it says.

Many in the hostile class inhabit the most impoverished northeastern provinces, often in isolated mountain villages where they perform hard labor at mines and farms. They have been most vulnerable to failures since the 1990s in North Korea's public food distribution system and resulting malnutrition.

Roberta Cohen, co-chairman of the rights group, says money, bribery and corruption recently have begun to erode the songbun system because of the emergence of informal markets and the scope for paying officials for favors. But she said songbun's main elements remain in place, "guaranteed by a complete absence of political freedom."

The study says a slang has developed around the songbun system, wherein the loyal class are referred to as "tomatoes" that are red on both the inside and outside, so are good socialists. Those of the wavering class are "apples" that are only red on the outside, and the hostile class is known as "grapes" ? considered politically unredeemable.

There's no sign that new ruler Kim Jong Un, the third in the dynasty, will change the policy. The study concludes that would be a direct threat to the North Korean elite and could undermine his consolidation of power.

Military suicides rapidly rising even as combat eases

Suicides among active-duty U.S. troops are surging, averaging nearly one per day this year.

That is the fastest pace since America began a decade of war.

Pentagon statistics obtained by The Associated Press show there were 146 suicides in the first 148 days of this year. That is 17 percent more than at the same point last year and 24 percent ahead of the 2010 pace.

Suicide totals had leveled off in 2010 and 2011 after rising rapidly since 2006.

Watch this artist sculpt Mark Zuckerberg?s face out of books

Yi Hong ??the Malaysian artist who can?paint using nothing but a coffee cup ??proved she's as pun-loving as she is creative by sculpting Mark Zuckerberg's face out of books. (Get it?)

Hong, who lives in China, spent time in the U.S. in May and wanted to create a portrait of an easily recognizable American to remind her of her trip. She went to?Facebook to ask for recommendations when the punny idea struck her.?Thanks to her experience working for an architecture firm, she was able to come up with a way to do the sculpture that wouldn't ruin the books completely.

She cut grooves into the edges of 36?A Game of Thrones novels (the thickest versions she could find) that she collected, and seven days of work later, the grooves in all the books formed a likeness of the Facebook founder. Check out the video above to see Hong working on her puntastic masterpiece.

Obama In LA: Air Space Violated Again By Small Plane

LOS ANGELES -- An F-16 fighter jet intercepted a small private plane after it entered airspace that was restricted for President Barack Obama's fundraising visit on Wednesday night.

The single-engine Cessna 117 was intercepted and forced to land shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

Obama was at the Beverly Hilton at the time, and was later taken to the Regent Beverly Wilshire for a 600-person campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles held by gay and lesbian supporters.

The plane was intercepted northwest of Los Angeles and landed without incident at an airfield in Camarillo, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

FAA officials would interview the pilot, whose name was not released, Gregor said.

There have been similar incidents when Obama visited Los Angeles in the past.

In May, a pilot mistakenly flew into restricted airspace as the president was about to leave the city from Los Angeles International Airport.

A similar scenario played out during Obama's February visit, when F-16 jets intercepted a plane that entered the airspace of Obama's helicopter, Marine One.

That plane was forced to land at Long Beach Airport, where police said they found about 40 pounds of marijuana during a search of the Cessna, and the pilot was arrested.

Australian minister defends comm security in China

(AP) ? Australia's defense minister said Wednesday he was protecting the confidentiality of government communications after a newspaper reported he left his delegation's laptop computers and cellphones behind before flying to mainland China.

Defense Minister Stephen Smith took precautions against Chinese espionage by leaving computers and phones in Hong Kong before flying to Beijing for a goodwill visit, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. His staff were given fresh phones in China with new numbers.

The minister took the step after such devices were "compromised" on previous ministerial visits, the newspaper said.

Leaving computers and telecommunications devices outside China is becoming standard operating procedure for the United States and many other Western governments, as well as corporate executives.

But the timing of the news reports could be awkward. Smith is in China to soothe concerns over Australia's decision to deepen its military ties with the United States by hosting up to 2,500 U.S. Marines at a joint training hub. China is Australia's biggest trading partner.

Australia also recently banned Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei from working on a national broadband network for security reasons.

Beijing's relations with Western governments have been strained by complaints about hacking traced to China and aimed at oil, technology and other types of companies.

Smith declined to say whether he had been hacked on any previous visit to China. But he said he had taken such security measures before.

"Ministers are entitled to ensure the confidentiality of their communications, so this is nothing unusual, nothing extraordinary," Smith told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television from Beijing.

"Governments do it, private corporations do it for industrial reasons, so this is just part of the modern world," he added.

He did not directly answer when asked if he took the same security measures when visiting the United States, Australia's major defense partner.

Kristen Stewart Makes Out with Self at MTV Movie Awards

Kristen Stewart. Who knew she had it in her?!?

At last night's MTV Movie Awards, the Twilight Saga star won Best Kiss along with co-star and real-life boyfriend Robert Pattinson.

It was the latter's third consecutive time taking home this trophy, only in this case Pattinson and Stewart did not make out, nor did Rob kiss Taylor Lautner, because he was not in attendance.

So, what was a lonely Stewart to do on stage? Actually be funny! She called out for Chris Hemsworth as a make-out partner... then Charlize Theron... and finally Lautner ("Taylor, old friend. Help an old friend. Come on!"). When no one showed up, Kristen was forced to rely on her own lips. Watch the video now and see what we mean:

Local Business Online Marketing ? Precisely Why Should You ...

One can?t deny the fact that every locality, whether it is a small town or a substantial city, has its own set of local corporations. But because with the difficult competition in the market as well as the slumbering economy there?s an significance in having a local business online marketing. Aside from that, a local business has to build awareness to their target market in the similar area. Often times, people will turn into the internet just to know the most current news about the corporations in the area; how to come across or get in touch with them. Because of this, there?s a necessity for businessmen to construct an online presence for their companies that may be viewed by the online public.

The Hottest Topic in Online Marketing

Even though internet marketing sounds technologically savvy, more digital; this slight difference does not impact the fact that internet marketing and regular marketing are closely comparable. Even though the Internet is used as a medium in developing the presence of a business, it is also significant that the marketing principle has to be understood before applying them. However, there are still new tricks or the next ideal thing that will be accomplished by businesses and one is SEOs.

Search engine optimization services is what many websites and corporations use today; it?s a valuable tool on how a business can construct their presence in the online community. By optimizing their websites, their website can improve their search rankings in the important search engines many people use these days. If the website has a better rank in search engine final results, then it would be much easier for the business to reach their market and at the similar time attract more traffic.

So Why Do It

The causes why many local corporations are working with internet marketing would be many to mention, but one considerable cause is the affordability of internet marketing. An effective Search engine optimization or any other online marketing is all about creating a presence that calls for fewer funds but more on effort. Businesses can see that the regular and expensive marketing they?ve can?t readily generate the important results they want, especially if their funds are limited. However, it is the opposite with online marketing. And given that the lives of many people right now are so intertwined with the Internet, an online marketing strategy could possibly reach more people.

Last but not the least, every single style of business is now carrying out it. Businesses need to go using the flow, so as to remain afloat and survive the competition. Now, many folks are working with the Internet, not only to know more about organizations but additionally come across the services and goods they want. It is actually vital for a business to have a presence on the Web so that they could create leads, rather than letting that certain lead go to waste when it chooses another business instead.

AT&T announces Samsung Galaxy S III plans: preorders begin June 6th for $200, will be available in red

STUB AT&T announces Samsung Galaxy S III

Sure, it's late to the Samsung Galaxy S III announcement party, but we suppose AT&T is letting the other carriers duke it out for the attention first before it came out with its own revelation. Now that it has the platform all to itself, AT&T has now officially made its intentions known. The Snapdragon S4-powered device will offer three color options and will be available for pre-order on June 6th starting at $200 for a 16GB model (shipping dates and retail availability have not been announced yet). What's the third hue choice, alongside the white and blue? Red. That's right: seeking ways to customize the Galaxy S III as a means of differentiating itself from the other four Galaxy S III devices, AT&T will be proudly selling its new flagship smartphone in glorious red.

There's a bit of disappointing news to go with the good, however -- at least, if you're a fan of more storage. AT&T will sell only the 16GB model, and anyone seeking a total of 32GB will need to go with a $39 16GB microSD card. Aside from this, everything else appears to be exactly the same as the rest of the pack, which is encouraging news for anyone who wishes US carriers would shift to a state of existence as dumb pipes.

HIV stigma: We're back in the dark ages | Stuff.co.nz

About 40 children in New Zealand have HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), statistics from Dunedin School of Medicine's Aids Epidemiology Group show.

Between 2005 and 2010, 978 adults were diagnosed with HIV, which can lie dormant for years and develops into Aids when the virus attacks the immune system. HIV is most commonly contracted through sexual intercourse. It can also be passed to children through childbirth or blood transfusions.

The story of Eve van Grafhorst, whose family moved to Hastings after she was victimised in Australia, helped shed light on the stigma around the virus.

Eve contracted Aids through a contaminated blood transfusion, the final one of 11 that were used to save her life after a premature birth.

But parents are still choosing not to speak out about their child's illness out of fear of others' reactions.

The situation was highlighted last month when the family of a 4-year-old boy with HIV said he was not welcome at Mokopuna Early Childhood Education and Care Centre in Whangarei. Centre management denied staff told his family he was not welcome, and his mother has since chosen to place him in another preschool.

Just two children with HIV are of preschool age in New Zealand, and like many parents of children with HIV, they like to keep their situation private.

The parents of a 9-year-old boy with HIV who spoke with the Sunday Star-Times had a better experience at their childcare centre.

They were hesitant to talk to anyone about their son's condition, and told only three staff members, family and best friends.

"They didn't have a problem at all, they helped me pass a difficult time."

Their son was diagnosed at 15 months after becoming ill. Unbeknown to his parents, who knew little about HIV, he had contracted the virus from his mother at birth.

They said that the way Mokopuna Childcare Centre treated the family of the four-year-old in the latest case was unnecessary.

"They have so many ways to say if they don't want the boy to be there. I can't understand why they had to let other families know."

There is no cure for HIV but patients are prescribed antiretrovirals that suppress the virus to low levels.

Their son's virus levels are kept low through daily medication, reducing the risk of infection to other people. He takes part in school sports, events, camps and extra-curricular activities and there have been no issues.

The 4-year-old in the Whangarei case also had viral loads which were undetectable. His levels were lower than 50 parts per million of blood, meaning there was a minimal chance of risk of infection, NZ Aids Foundation spokeswoman Dawn O'Connor said.

"Children with anaphylactic peanut allergies would require significantly more work than a kid with HIV," O'Connor said.

Positive Women national co-ordinator Jane Bruning said parents are even more afraid to speak out now following the Whangarei case.

"This is exactly the reaction they feared they would get."

Parents are not legally required to disclose to a school whether their child is HIV positive. Schools and early childhood centres are well equipped to care for such children by following the Ministry of Education's simple guidelines on dealing with infectious blood-borne illness such as hepatitis.

But they are also strongly recommended for all scenarios where blood is involved.

They include wearing disposable gloves when cleaning cuts and immediately placing blood-stained cloths and materials in a disposable bag. Waterproof plasters or bandages should be applied to disinfected cuts, and hands and surfaces must be cleaned and sterilised afterwards.

School policy enrolment packs also ask parents to notify their school when they are keeping their child home for notifiable highly contagious diseases such as chicken pox, measles or mumps.

Few children have been born with HIV since pregnant mothers can now be screened for the virus and receive treatment in their first trimester. Once born, the baby is washed and started on a precautionary course of treatment for six weeks to eradicate the virus.

Where's Starbucks? Ranking our favorite coffees

Reuters

In the most recently reported quarter, revenue at Green Mountain's parent company rose 37 percent to $885 million.

By Douglas A. McIntyre, 24/7 Wall St.

Americans love their coffee. Three-quarters of adults drink coffee and 58 percent say they drink coffee daily, according to the National Coffee Association. Like other large consumer products in the U.S., a substantial number of brands vie for market share -- and for profit. And like other food and beverage products, each brand tries to distinguish itself for consumers based on taste, price, and in some cases, snob appeal.

24/7 Wall St.: The happiest countries in the world

Based on 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend Rankings, 24/7 Wall St.?identified?the most popular coffee brands that people make themselves. The seven coffee companies with scores above the coffee product average measured by Harris did well based on familiarity, quality, purchase consideration and the ability to generate buzz.

Green Mountain coffee brand topped the list. Its parent company, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, is often viewed as a competitor to Starbucks, which did not make the list. In fact, the brands that are rated below average are probably better known than those rated above average.?The losers include Chock Full O'Nuts, Nescafe, Newman's Own, Seattle's Best, and Starbucks.

Because Harris is not the only research firm that polls people on coffee preferences, we looked at other opinion studies, including one by Consumer Reports. Oddly enough, its preference ratings put Starbucks? house blend as the highest rated brand. The differences in the results show how unpredictable research is when consumer preferences are considered.

Because of this, 24/7 also looked beyond subjective measures of preference. We looked at price, based on the assumption that many coffee drinkers consider value. We also examined annual revenue of each brand, as well as the number of bags sold last year. We discovered that the most favored brands are not inexpensive.?Folgers?Ground Coffee and Green Mountain, two of the most preferred brands, cost well over $7 per bag. Millstone and Eight O?Clock, while still popular, are less preferred, and each of these costs little more than $5 per bag

The relationship of price to quality perception should not come as a surprise. Starbucks has made a fortune selling expensive coffee at?trendy stores. Its customers are not complaining that their $3 cup of coffee costs twice as much as it does at the neighborhood deli.

24/7 Wall St.?reviewed?the 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend Rankings of coffee brands, which quantifies brand strength among consumers, to identify the most popular coffees. We included dollar sales, change in dollar sales from one year ago and unit sales of bagged ground coffee over the latest 52-week period in the United States provided by SymphonyIRI Group, a Chicago-based market research firm. The group?s data?reflects?sales at supermarkets, drugstores, gas/convenience stores and mass market retailers, but excludes Walmart club stores, and liquor stores.

These are America?s favorite coffees:

7. Caribou

  • ?Parent company:?Caribou Coffee Company
  • ?1-year?bags?sold:?2,134,128
  • ?1-year?sales:?$16,793,690
  • ?Price per bag:?$7.87

Owned by the publicly traded Minneapolis-based Caribou Coffee Company, the brand comes in at seventh in the Harris poll. Founded in 1992, Caribou?is?the second most expensive coffee on this list at $7.87 a bag. The brand also has the second-lowest annual dollar sales of any coffee brand on the list?at?less than $17 million. In its most recently reported quarter, Caribou?s parent company sales were $80.5 million for all its brands, up 11 percent from the same quarter in the prior year. In its coffee blend reviews, Consumer Reports gave Caribou?s ?daybreak morning? blend especially poor reviews.

6. Maxwell House

  • ?Parent company:?Kraft Foods, Inc.
  • ?1-year?bags?sold:?73,285,570

  • ?Price per bag:?$6.37

A Kraft Foods product, Maxwell House?s 52-week sales through April 15 was in excess of $467 million, making it the second best-selling ground coffee in the U.S. Despite strong sales, Maxwell House has performed poorly in coffee blend ratings issued by Consumer Reports, as none of the four blends (decaffeinated, breakfast, original roast medium, and master blend mild)?was given?a ?good? rating. However, at $6.37 a bag, Maxwell House?s brand value?is?likely bolstered by a middling price in conjunction with customer familiarity with both the brand and its parent company.

5. Eight O?Clock

  • ?Parent company:?Tata Global Beverages
  • ?1-year?bags?sold:?13,519,080
  • ?1-year?sales:?$74,800,170
  • ?Price per bag:?$5.53

First sold in 1859 by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (now A&P), the Eight O?Clock?brand?s longevity is unmatched by any other ground coffee on this list. In the 1920s through the 1950s, the company?claims?it was the most popular ground coffee brand in the U.S. Since then, however, its popularity has declined. ?Since 2006, the brand has been owned by Tata Global Beverages and, as of 2010, was still the best-selling whole bean coffee, according to the company.

Android Central

It's been another busy week for international Android news. The week's biggest story was undoubtedly the European Galaxy S III launch -- Samsung's latest flagship is now available on hundreds of carriers across the continent. (In "marble white" for now, as the "pebble blue" variant faces delays of 2-3 weeks.) As for the Galaxy S III in the U.S., the latest rumors suggest a possible June 20 launch, but that's yet to be confirmed.

We also got another European first this week -- the arrival of the Orange San Diego, Europe's first Intel-powered smartphone. And our own Richard Devine was on hand to give us his first impressions.

Other notable developments included HTC's launch of the Desire C on Three UK, and the arrival of long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Sony Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo, as well as HTC's Sensation XL.

And earlier on in the week, we reviewed the Sony Xperia U, an interesting little mid-range device from the Japanese manufacturer.
