Sony Xperia SP announced, we go hands-on (video)

Sony Xperia SP announced, we go handson video

While the Sony's Xperia Z tablet and smartphone occupy its high-end Android selection, it's now the turn of the middleweights. Say hello to the Xperia SP, a 4.6-inch phone that ties together the some of the features (and design cues) from both the S and P models of 2012 -- yep, it's all in the name. Alongside a 720p screen with Sony's Bravia Mobile Engine 2, there's an 8-megapixel Exmor RS sensor on the back, NFC, LTE and a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon MSM8960 Pro processor. That's all built into a classy aluminum frame that's just shy of 10mm thick and weighs 5.5 ounces. The phone marks the return of Sony's see-through strip, but with a slightly more advanced (and customizable) notification light built into it. We managed to spend a bit of time with the device last month, so please hop past the break for some more impressions and our hands-on video.

Sierra family via EPA file

A undated family handout photograph shows US tourist Sarai Sierra. Reports state that Sarai Sierra who was on holiday alone in Istanbul was killed by at least one fatal blow to her head.

By Jonathon Burch, Reuters

ANKARA ? Turkish police have arrested the suspected killer of a tourist from New York whose whose body was found in Istanbul earlier this year, a provincial governor's office said.

The suspect, identified by the initials Z.T. and nicknamed Laz Ziya by Turkish media, was arrested in Reyhanli in Turkey's southern Hatay province near the border with Syria, the provincial governor's office said on its website.

The body of 33-year-old Sarai Sierra, a married mother of two from Staten Island, was found in the ruins of Istanbul's old city wall last month after she was first reported missing in late January.

Sierra, who had been traveling alone, was killed by a blow to the head.

After questioning Sunday, the man was handed over to judicial authorities, the governor's office said. It gave no further details.

Sierra's killing has attracted wide media attention the U.S. and in Turkey, a country which receives millions of tourists each year and is generally seen as a safe destination for foreign travelers.

  • "Young L.A. Girl Slain; Body Slashed in Two" -L.A.'s Daily News

On January 15, 1947, the remains of Elizabeth Short, were found in a vacant lot in Los Angeles. What made this discovery the stuff of tabloid sensation, however, was the Glasgow smile left on the aspiring actress' face--made with 3-inch slashes on each side. This, coupled with Short's dark hair, fair complexion and reputation for sporting a dahlia in her hair, dubbed her "The Black Dahlia" in headlines. What followed was a media circus filled with rumors and speculation about the promiscuous 22-year-old's checkered past. What haunts theorists to this day, apart from the victim's uniquely nightmarish visage, is that the case remains unsolved after some 200 suspects were interviewed and ultimately released--making it one of Hollywood's most lurid legends.

  • "I Am Not Guilty - Thus Lizzie Borden Pleads Before Judge Hammond at New Bedford." -Boston Journal

<em>"Lizzie Borden took an axe And gave her mother forty whacks. And when she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one."</em> So goes the lurid nursery rhyme to one of the most mystifying crimes of the century. The nature of the deaths of Andrew J. Borden and his wife, Abby, are trumped only by the identity of the alleged perpetrator: their daughter, Lizzie. Inexplicably found "not guilty" in contrast to the era's zeitgeist of swift justice, Lizzie's legacy--guilty or not--has become immortalized as one of the most perplexing cases of parricide in history.

  • "Texas Mother Charged with Killing Her 5 Children" -CNN

In a case of mother-gone-mad that startled a nation, Andrea Yates, to her few friends and neighbors, was known as a mere recluse suffering from postpartum depression leading up to the birth of her fifth child. That all changed on June 20, 2001, when she snapped, drowning five of her children in their home's bathtub. She was convicted in 2002 of capital murder, carrying a sentence of life in prison with possible parole. As of July 2006, however, a Texas jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity.

  • "Buttafuoco Admits to Sex with Amy Fisher" -New York Times

Known as the "Long Island Lolita," Fisher became involved with Joey Buttafuoco in May of 1991. Shortly after the two began a sexual relationship (she, 16, while he, 35, was married with two children), his presence and influence in her life became all she cared for. In what he's since denied to this day, Buttafuoco would go on to help an obsessive Fisher plan the murder of his wife, culminating in Fisher putting a bullet in Mary Jo Buttafuoco's head, but failing to kill her. In the highly publicized trial that ensued, Fisher accepted a plea deal for 15 years in prison in exchange for a testimony against Joey, who faced and served out charges of statutory rape.

  • "Murder of a Little Beauty" -People Magazine

With a face that graced the covers of nearly every news and gossip rag during the winter of '96, it's hard to suggest the death of child beauty pageant queen JonBen?t Ramsey had little effect outside the city of Boulder, Colorado. Found dead from a blow to the head and strangulation in the family's basement, coupled with a ransom note left on the staircase asking for $118,00 (conveniently or coincidentally, nearly the same amount Mr. Ramsey received as a bonus that year), as well as no obvious signs of forced entry into the house, the evidence was overwhelmingly stacked against parents John and Patsy, who managed to maintain their innocence throughout the investigation. The case reopened in 2010, but critics cite poor handling of the crime scene as obstructing what remains a mystery regarding the events of that Christmas day.

  • "F.B.I. Joins Probe in Slaughter of 8 Nurses" -Nashua Telegraph

Tattooed with "Born to Raise Hell" on his arm, Richard Speck made good on his mantra through a history of violence, theft, alcoholism, and spousal abuse, but made his infamy known to all when, on July 13, 1966, he walked into a dormitory armed with a knife. After leaving 8 student nurses dead in his wake, only one, Cora Amurao, was spared--hiding under a bed until 6 a.m. Speck was found guilty of murder and died of a heart attack in prison. As one of the most press-worthy crimes of the decade, the grim events were used most recently as the backdrop for an episode of <em>Mad Men</em>.

  • "Sharon Tate, Four Others Murdered" -Los Angeles Times

Perhaps the most terrifying figure in American crime to have never actually killed anyone himself, Charles Manson founded a "family" of wayward individuals who hailed him as a prophet. So strong was his manipulation, he ordered, on the night of Aug. 8, 1969, four of his followers to kill everyone at the residence of 10050 Cielo Drive--including Roman Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, and her unborn child. Tate was stabbed 16 times, and her blood was used to write "pig" on the house's front door. The next night, Manson accompanied six of his family to the residence of supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife, only to help bind them before ordering their deaths. In 1971, Manson and three of his fellow defendants were found guilty of murder in the first-degree and several other crimes. At the time, it was the longest murder trial in American history, spanning nine and a half months, as well as the most expensive, estimating $1 million. Manson was denied parole for the 12th time in April 2012.

  • "Lindbergh Baby Kidnapped from Home of Parents on Farm Near Princeton; Taken from His Crib; Wide Search on" -The New York Times

Used as the basis for an Agatha Christie novel (<em>Murder on the Orient Express</em>) and dubbed "the biggest story since the Resurrection" by famed journalist H.L. Mencken, the kidnapping and murder of aviator Charles Lindbergh's infant son continues to fascinate theorists today. Charles Jr. was discovered missing from his second-floor bedroom on March 1, 1932, along with a note demanding a then-unimaginable $50,000, igniting a media frenzy like no other. The tabloid pandemonium prompted many tips and leads, but none as concrete as a package containing the boy's pajamas and another message demanding the ransom. After some misdirection from the presumed kidnapper, Lindbergh's child was soon after discovered in the woods along a road near the family residence. Notwithstanding the evidence stockpiled against the easily vilified illegal German immigrant Bruno Hauptmann (who was sentenced), speculation prevails as to the true identity of the caper responsible in this tragic tale of one of America's greatest heroes.

  • "Not Guilty as Sin" -NY Post

Still fresh in the minds of many and not to easily be forgotten, the trial of Casey Anthony turned Orlando, Florida into anything but the "happiest place on earth." Following a series of lies, misdirection and manipulation by then-22 year old Casey, Caylee's skeletal remains were found five months into the investigation, setting the stage for what could only be described as the most incessantly publicized and shocking trial in recent memory. The media had a field day that went on for months: Highlighting the young, pretty, party girl image used against her in court as the prosecution tore apart an aimless defense--or so it seemed. After resorting to throwing her family under the bus, incriminating people entirely made-up ("Zanny the Nanny"), and fabricating elaborate stories for the police, Casey was found not guilty of murder due to evidence deemed mostly circumstantial and not meeting the burden of "beyond reasonable doubt," inciting much debate regarding whether true justice was served.

  • "An American Tragedy" -TIME

Known and heralded as the "trial of the century," former football star and actor O.J. Simpson found himself in the middle of the nation's biggest, most-televised trial following the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, but not before fleeing an all-points bulletin in his Ford Bronco with 20 units in tow, interrupting game 5 of the NBA Finals. By enlisting a dream team including Johnnie Cochran, Robert Shapiro, and Robert Kardashian, the defense claimed Simpson was merely a victim of police fraud with regard to contaminated DNA evidence, while famously quipping "If it [the glove] doesn't fit, you must acquit." On October 3, 1995, an estimated 100 million people from around the world tuned in to watch the jury hand down a verdict of not guilty, consequently resulting in an estimated loss of $480 million in productivity and inciting an ongoing discussion of race in the judicial system that continues to this day.

Pope's former neighbor recalls his 'love' letter

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? An Argentine woman who grew up as the neighbor of the future Pope Francis says she was very briefly the object of his affections when they were just 12 years old.

Amalia Damonte is now 76, just like the pope, and she still lives in a house just four doors down from where Jorge Mario Bergoglio grew up in the Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

And she says it was clear from the start that he was thinking about dedicating his life to God.

Damonte said she especially remembers a handwritten letter he left for her, because it got her into a lot of trouble at the time.

"I remember perfectly that he had drawn me a little white house, which had a red roof, and it said "this is what I'll buy when we marry."

She said he supposedly also told her "If I don't marry you, I'm going to be a priest."

The Argentine media has had a field day with Damonte's recollections of her former neighbor, calling her the pope's "girlfriend."

But, Damonte said, "These were childish things, nothing more."

Nevertheless, she said, her strict parents were furious about the missive.

"My mom broke it off. Good Lord. She came to get me at the school and she said 'so, you're getting letters from a boy?!' "

Her parents then did everything they could to keep them apart.

The Bergoglio family moved away from Membrillar Street decades ago. Damonte said she moved away as well, married and raised a family, and only returned to her parents' home years later. She followed her former neighbor's rise through the church, but never tried to speak with him again.

    A Debt-Free Approach to Graduate Education for African-Americans ...

    by Kelley Bass JacksonVinson

Bradley and Bonita Vinson suggested ways that African-American students can obtain a debt-free graduate education.

African-Americans bear a disproportionate amount of consumer debt in our nation?s economy. The wealth gap between African-Americans and average Americans continues to widen. One way to close that gap is through higher education.

The pursuit of graduate education increases the likelihood of even greater earning potential; however, more student loan debt can be a barrier to African-American students? pursuit of graduate enrollment and completion and adversely impact their financial futures.

In a recent presentation to attendees of the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education?s (AABHE) Annual Conference, husband and wife finance gurus Bradley and Bonita Vinson exhorted that financial empowerment is the key to financial success. As the proprietors of Vinson Financial Consulting Services and creators of Your Personal Economy Financial Empowerment Seminars, Bradley and Bonita shared the fallacy of credit, the harmful effects of debt, how to get out of debt, and offered debt-free options to pursue when seeking advanced degrees.

Not only is living debt-free the bottom line of the Vinson?s lecture, it is also the premise. Before the Vinson team offered the debt-free approach to obtaining higher education, they felt it very important to share where African-Americans stand financially as a community and ?how we got in here? in the first place.

Research studies reveal startling statistics and information about African-Americans? economy. Taken from the Vinson?s presentation, let?s look at the statistics:

    The Financial Status of African-Americans:

    • More than 1 trillion per year in buying power. (Making us the 16th largest country)
    • 48% adversely affected by the real estate crisis
    • 39% deals with lack of disposable income
    • 12% fear debt is unmanageable
    • 20% have taken loans from their 401K/retirement accounts to deal with debt

    ?

    How we got here:

    • African-Americans earn only 61% of White Americans? income
    • 54% of African-Americans have no savings
    • Less than 50% of African-Americans own a home compared to 70% of Whites
    • African-Americans are most frequent users of payday loans
    • African-Americans spend double that of Whites on the lottery

    ?

Where do we go from here? Firstly, there are practical things we can do to improve our individual financial statuses.

?The first thing I tell people to do is see where you are financially. A lot of people aren?t broke; they just mismanage their money,? Bradley Vinson said. ?Pay yourself first. You don?t see wealthy people standing in the lottery lines. You see poor people standing in the lottery lines,? he said. ?A lot of times it?s not how much you make, it?s how much you are giving away.?

The Vinsons preach a ?debt-free? mantra to teach others how to get there. ?The only thing a good FICO score will do for you is help you get into more debt,? he declared, adding that the way to financial success is not through an ability to acquire more debt, but through prudent money management and increasing your income.

?This is why graduate education is important, especially in the African-American community,? Bonita Vinson said. ?The good news is the more education we have the more likely we are to earn more money.?

Based on the Vinson?s research, studies show that, as the educational level goes higher, African-Americans are less likely to have attained advanced degrees than non-Hispanics and Whites. Studies also show that, as even higher education levels are attained, the more the average income increases for those who have obtained advanced degrees.

There are other benefits to expect from receiving a graduate education in addition to increased wages. You can expect financial security; you can expect upward economic mobility; and you can expect increased career opportunities and options.

The Vinson?s acknowledge the actual and perceived barriers to getting a graduate education, such as the need to earn money, the need to support a family, the accumulation of more debt, and/or the inability to save. However, Bradley Vinson said, ?Where there?s a will, there?s a way.?

The duo offered several avenues to finance a graduate education while overcoming some of those financial barriers.

    ?

    Get paid to study:

    • Teaching/Graduate Assistantships
    • Employee Education Benefits (working for the federal government, banks, college Institutions, and other corporations that will supplement your education as an employee)
    • Internal and External Fellowships
    • Minority tuition and fee waivers/ Minority student stipends
    • Join professional organizations related to major African-American associations
    • Research fellowships, grants, stipends and loan forgiveness programs

    ?

Organizations that serve as a clearinghouse for assistance and guidance on educational funding:

    • The PhD Project (phdproject.com)
    • Commission on Institutional Cooperation (cic.uiuc.edu)
    • National Black Graduate Student Association (nbgsa.org)

    ?

    Sample fellowships include:

    • Fellowships through Honor Societies, Fraternities, Sororities
    • Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral, Dissertation and Post-Doctoral Fellowships for Minorities
    • Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies
    • National Science Foundation Minority Graduate Fellowships

    ?

The Vinson?s encourage those applying for graduate fellowships to apply early. The deadlines are typically between September and February.

As certified financial consultants, Bonita and Bradley Vinson travel the country lecturing on financial empowerment. They believe it is their calling to teach others how to improve their finances and live debt-free. They teach from experience. They both acknowledge that getting there wasn?t always an easy road. But financial freedom has improved their lives so much that there is no going back.

Bradley Vinson?s final thought, ?If you?re already hurting, at least hurt trying to get somewhere.?

After Pope Benedict XVI, will conclave pick another 'green pope'?

Pope Benedict XVI made environmentalism a central theme of his papacy. Will the conclave elect another 'green pope' to follow Pope Benedict XVI?

    By David J. Unger,?Correspondent / March 12, 2013

Members of the faithful wait during the conclave in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican Tuesday. For some, the environmentalism of Pope Benedict XVI was less an adaptation to modern trends and more a reflection of traditional Catholic concern for the poor.

Pope Benedict XVI made environmentalism a central theme of his nearly eight years as Bishop of Rome, earning him the nickname "the green pope." With the conclave underway, it's possible that legacy will have some sway over?the 115 red-robed cardinals charged with choosing a new pope.

Cardinal ?scar Andr?s Rodr?guez Maradiaga of Honduras could further Catholic environmentalism if elected Pope, Mother Jones notes. Cardinal Rodr?guez has called climate change a "faith issue," and has advocated for a global treaty to reduce worldwide carbon emissions.

For some, the greening of the church would be less an adaptation to modern trends, and more a reflection of traditional Christian values.

"It's not unlike the realization a few decades ago that social justice isn't a side issue for Christianity but a central aspect of it that flows out of our relationship to a loving God concerned for all people," wrote Robin Gottfried, director of the University of the South's?Center for Religion and Environment in?Sewanee, Tenn., in an e-mail.?"[B]ecause many young people are greatly concerned about the environment and sustainability ? by addressing these concerns the church also will position itself to address the youth and help stanch the flow of youth out of the church."

There's a connection between a concern for natural resources and Catholicism's "long-standing, centuries-old" critique of consumerism and materialism,?Randolph Haluza-DeLay, an editor of the forthcoming book "How the World?s Religions are Responding to Climate Change,"?said in a telephone interview.

Celeb credit files frozen after data posted online

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The three major credit bureaus say hackers who have posted credit reports on stars and government officials in recent days did not breach secure databases but relied on personal information they collected elsewhere on the public figures.

Representatives for Experian, Equifax and TransUnion wrote in statements that are cooperating with authorities investigating the website that has posted private financial data of stars such as Jay-Z, Tiger Woods as well as the vice president and first lady Michelle Obama.

The companies said they were also working to minimize the financial damage to the victims. Experian spokesman Gerry Tschopp said the company had frozen credit files of those whose info has been posted online.

The FBI and Secret Service are investigating the site, which remained active Wednesday morning.

Equifax spokesman Tim Klein wrote in a statement that an initial investigation showed the hackers exploited a website designed to give consumers a free credit report. The three companies all state that the hackers used a wealth of personal information on their victims to impersonate them and generate the credit reports.

Although Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are included on the site, their credit reports have not been posted.

The site includes Social Security numbers, credit reports, addresses and phone numbers on most of its victims.

It bears an Internet suffix originally assigned to the former Soviet Union, and many of the pages feature unflattering pictures or taunting messages of the person featured. Others whose information is posted include pop star Britney Spears, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A counter on the website indicated that it had received more than 450,000 views since its existence was revealed on Monday.

Social Security numbers posted on Jay-Z, Mel Gibson and others matched records in public databases. Social Security numbers are not public records, although they used to be included in some court filings. Many courts require the information be redacted from filings since the numbers can be used to steal a person's identity and open credit accounts in their name.

Online security expert Marc Maiffret said sensitive information can often be gleaned from a single database, but the varied nature of the people targeted made the site's motives less clear.

Maiffret, the chief technology officer for Carlsbad, Calif.-based security firm BeyondTrust, said the site contained information that, if accurate, could be very damaging to its targets.

"Pretty much everything comes falling down once you have a Social Security number," he said. "Once somebody has that, the person has the keys to everything."

The information could be used to shut down accounts and utilities, although Maiffret said celebrities and government officials have more resources to protect themselves and their financial companies will likely be guarding their accounts since the site's postings.

Average consumers should consider adding a second password to their accounts to protect against hackers who have access to their Social Security numbers and other financial information.

Los Angeles police also are investigating, trying to determine how information was obtained, including the address and credit report of Police Chief Charlie Beck.

Beck told reporters Tuesday that detectives would work to bring anyone responsible for posting the info online to justice.

"We will vigorously pursue the individuals that have made me a victim and have made a number of other people that are in the public eye victims," he said.

Beck acknowledged that many hackers operate outside the United States but said there is often a connection stateside that can lead to prosecutions.

Frank Preciado, assistant officer in charge at the LAPD online section, said the postings are illegal. He said the information on the police chief was likely taken from what is supposed to be a secure database of city employees.

The site's page on Beck includes a reference to former officer Christopher Dorner, who apparently committed suicide after he killed four people during a multi-day rampage. Beck's page included the message "YouCantCornerTheDorner" and an image of a woman protesting police corruption.

Crowds in Rome flock to hail new Pope Francis

By Catherine Hornby and Naomi O'Leary

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of flag-waving pilgrims and Romans saluted the new Pope Francis on Wednesday, warming to the Argentine's first words from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica after his surprise appointment.

Crowds who had come to the Vatican on a rainy evening were rewarded when white smoke billowed from the makeshift chimney on the Sistine Chapel to indicate a pope had been chosen little more than 24 hours after cardinals began their conclave.

Romans and visitors of all ages rushed along the Via della Conciliazione towards the Vatican hoping to catch a glimpse of the new pope as the peal of bells relayed the news around the city.

More than an hour after the smoke appeared, French cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran pronounced "Habemus Papam" (We have a pope) and named him as Argentina's Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

Bergoglio was not one of the obvious candidates but those who knew his background praised the choice of the bespectacled 76-year-old.

"He's very humble, I heard that in Buenos Aires he used to take public transport, have an apartment and cook for himself," said Jules Charette, 54, a lawyer from Quebec in Canada who traveled to Rome especially for the conclave.

"The fact that he chose the name Francesco (Francis) means a lot. It means we will have a humble, simple pope close to the people and close to the poor people. But it was a big surprise," he added.

Like many Argentines, Bergoglio has ancestral ties to Italy and that pleased Italians who have not held the papacy since 1978 after monopolizing it for centuries.

"It's a very good choice, I'm very pleased. I remember he has Italian roots. I'm happy he is from another continent, it shows the universal church is embracing the whole world, said Stefano Genoese, 47, an IT consultant from Rome.

Bergoglio, the first pope from outside Europe since the 8th century, told the crowd in Italian that the cardinals had gone "almost to the end of the world to get him".

He also praised his predecessor Pope Benedict who stepped down last month and ended by telling the crowd "Good night and have a good rest."

"I thought he was very humble, asking everyone to pray for him first," said Father Ted Martin, from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

"I was completely surprised, I'm happy it's a South American, as they have the most Catholics in the world."

Dating & Relationship Advice To My 13 Year Old Clutch Magazine

Dating & Relationship Advice To My 13 Year Old

Sometimes I wish someone actually sat me down as a kid and talked to me about dating and relationships. ?I don?t ever recall talking to either parent about these subjects, but I did hear ?You better not come home knocked up?. So yeah, I knew not to get pregnant, but I didn?t actually know how one ?got pregnant?, if that makes any sense. Health classes were a joke in school. My girlfriends didn?t know anything either. And the little boys in middle school were perverts and spent their free time trying to touch on girl?s butts. The last boy who attempted to cop a feel in the 8th grade ended up with a black eye.

Instead, I learned everything I knew at the time from Judy Blume, Jackie Collins and Danielle Steele. Yeah, not quite the holy?grail?of learning, but it was all I had. Blume taught me about menstruation and innocent crushes. Collins and Steele taught me about lust, love and the dangers that could arise from both. ?Life taught me the rest. ?Now that I?m the parent of a teenager, I give him the advice I wish I would have received when I was his age.

Last week my 13-year-old son came into my room, laid next to me on my bed and ?placed his head on my shoulder. This is usually what he does when he wants something, so I was preparing myself for either of these questions:

    • Can I have another dog?
    • Can I get another gecko?
    • There?s this new video game coming out?can you buy it?

I was preparing myself to say no to whatever request he was about to ask. To my surprise he asked for something else.

    Dating advice.

    Record scratches.

    What?

Just last year girls were gross, rude and mean. Now he wants advice about dating them? ?To say I wasn?t prepared for that question was an understatement. ?I needed a few minutes to contemplate my answer, but with him, ?an answer needs to be supplied immediately. ?So I thought about it for all of 5 seconds. I thought about what I wanted to hear when I was his age, then I thought about what I learned and what I?m still learning along the way.

His question was about a friend he has a crush on. He didn?t know whether he should ask her ?out? or just remain friends. ?I?m not really sure what he meant by ?out?, because there?s not so much a 13 year can do besides the movies and the mall, but I didn?t bring up that issue. ?I asked him if there were any ?signs? that she may be interested in more than a friendship type of way, because sometimes people can misinterpret signals. I didn?t want him to answer the question, but to just think about it to himself and pay attention to their interactions at school. ?If he felt that there was something ?more? there, then maybe he should simply ask her to the movies and see what she says. ?But if she turns him down, don?t be disappointed because you can still be friends, without the whole dating aspect.

I think if kids are taught early that men and women can be platonic friends, there won?t be 50,000 blog posts 10 years from now with people asking ?Can Men & Women Really Just Be Friends??. Because we all know that horse has been beaten to death.

Last Friday I dropped my son off at his school?s 8th grade lock in, and he introduced me to his friend and her dad. ?I spoke to her father briefly and we shared a few laughs about raising teenagers. As the two kids ran into the school, they talked basketball and what movie they were seeing this weekend, I exchanged glances with her father and he summed it up appropriately, ?Those two are like peas in a pod. I hope they stay friends for a long time?.

AMD Richland chips will arrive in notebooks next month, promise better graphics, battery life and a few extras

First notebooks with AMD Richland chips due out next month, should bring better battery life and some nice little extras video

Yearly product cycles? AMD doesn't need that long, thank you. It's planning to release a fresh batch of low-power APUs just 11 months after Trinity. Known as Richland, this generation won't be vastly different at the silicon level, as it's built on the same 32nm process as Trinity, has the same number of transistors and offers very similar compute performance in terms of raw GFLOPs. However, there are some noteworthy upgrades in attendance, including a move to Radeon HD 8000M graphic processors, which are claimed to deliver a 20-40 percent increase in "visual performance" in higher-end models, plus power-saving tweaks that should provide over an hour of additional battery life while watching 720p video -- perhaps even enough for two extra episodes of House of Cards. Some Windows 8 enhancements will also tag along for the ride, and these will promptly be revealed if you read on past the break.

    Pakistan reeling from anti-Christian attack

Pakistani Christians search for salvageable belongings from the remains of their razed houses in Lahore on Monday.

By Waj S. Khan, Producer, NBC News

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan is reeling from a Muslim mob attack that set ablaze almost 200 buildings in a predominantly Christian neighborhood of Lahore, the country?s second largest city, on Saturday.

The mob was angered by alleged insults against Islam?s Prophet Muhammad.

Many Christians complain that Pakistan?s harsh blasphemy laws ? with offenses punishable by life in prison or even death ? have become a convenient excuse for exercising vigilante justice against them and other religious minorities. Christians make up less than 5 percent of Pakistan?s 180 million people; most Pakistanis are Sunni Muslim.

    Drunken dispute
The most recent incident was sparked by alleged remarks against Muhammad made by Sawan Masih, a 28-year-old Christian man, to two Muslim friends during a drunken argument. ?

The following day hundreds of angry Muslims marched through the neighborhood burning about 170 houses, seven shops and two churches. Some residents were injured, but there were no serious casualties.

The Pakistan Interfaith League, a "socio-political organization that works for peace and harmony for all in Pakistan," according to its chairman, Sajid Ishaq, has been tracking the event. They say there are no reliable witnesses to confirm whether the act of blasphemy was committed or not.

    AFP - Getty Images

Angry Pakistani demonstrators torch Christians' belongings during a protest over an alleged insult to the Prophet Muhammad in a Christian neighborhood of Lahore on March 9.

"The police knew the night before that something terrible was going to happen," said Ishaq, a 42-year-old Christian. "But they didn?t do much about stopping the mob. Rather, they told the community that they should evacuate. Where?s the sense in that?"

The lack of timely action from local authorities has left many demanding answers.

"We are totally outraged to learn that these buildings [in the Christian neighborhood] were set ablaze at 9:00 a.m.?The firefighting service did not arrive until 3:00 p.m.," said human rights activist Tahira Abdullah. "The blaze was not put out till nightfall? Exploitation of popular sentiment in the name of religion is not new in Pakistan, but it is reaching unprecedented proportions."?

While there were unconfirmed reports that political heavyweights and the local land mafia had orchestrated the attack to evacuate the Christian community from some very valuable real estate in the heart of Lahore, local observers did not count out inept governance as a probable cause.

"There?s usually a financial dispute, small or large, when these incidents occur," said Ashar-ur-Rehman, editor for the daily Dawn. "But they [the government] didn?t see any need to intervene. They were late. If you don?t allow people a sense of security, you are exposing yourself as complicit with perpetrators of the crime."

    'We want justice'
On Sunday, retaliatory riots by Christians engulfed Lahore and other Pakistani cities. ??

But some are trying to get justice in other ways.

"There were about 400 to 500 bibles burnt in the attack. The mob humiliated our holy scriptures and churches," said Ishaq of the Pakistan Interfaith League. "So we are asking that the culprits should be booked under the same blasphemy law that they allege we Christians broke."

The Supreme Court has taken notice of the incident, and hearings are underway investigating the inaction of the administration, which has announced $2,000 as compensation for each family

But according to the Pakistan Interfaith League, each family has suffered an average loss of around $20,000 for their property.?

"Our community is rejecting this token. We don?t want charity. We want rights. We want justice," said Ishaq.?

NEW DELHI (AP) ? The main suspect in the gang rape and fatal beating of a woman on a New Delhi bus, an attack that horrified Indians and set off national protests, committed suicide in jail Monday, police officials said.

Ram Singh, who is accused of driving the bus on which the 23-year-old student was raped and fatally assaulted by a group of six men in December, hanged himself with his own clothes, said G. Sudhakar, the top police official at Tihar jail.

Singh, along with four other men on trial with him on rape, murder and abduction charges, had been under a suicide watch, another jail official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. He said the five were being held in separate cells in separate buildings at the jail.

If convicted, the men could face the death penalty. The sixth accused is being tried and jailed separately because he is a juvenile.

Singh's lawyer, A. P. Singh, confirmed his client's death, saying he died at 5:30 a.m. He alleged that police maleficence led to his client's death.

"What do you mean killed himself? He has been killed in prison," Singh said.

Lawyers for the men have previously accused police of beating confessions out of their clients.

Indian jails have a reputation for overcrowding, poor management and brutal treatment of inmates.

The woman and a male friend were attacked after boarding the bus Dec. 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie, police say. The six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say. The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

The brutal attack set off nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

Singh's death comes as the trial was deep underway, with another hearing scheduled for Monday. There was no word if that would be affected.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North and South Korea staged dueling war games Monday as threatening rhetoric from the rivals rose to the highest level since North Korea rained artillery shells on a South Korean island in 2010.

Enraged over the South's joint military drills with the United States and recent U.N. sanctions, Pyongyang has piled threat on top of threat, including vows to launch a nuclear strike on the U.S. and to scrap the nearly 60-year-old armistice that ended the Korean War. Seoul has responded with tough talk of its own and has placed its troops on high alert.

North Korea's main newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported that the armistice was nullified Monday as Pyongyang had earlier announced. The North followed through on another promise Monday, shutting down a Red Cross hotline that the North and South used for general communication and to discuss aid shipments and separated families' reunions.

The 11-day military drills that started Monday involve 10,000 South Korean and about 3,000 American troops. Those coincide with two months of separate U.S.-South Korean field exercises that began March 1.

Also continuing are large-scale North Korean drills that Seoul says involve the army, navy and air force. The South Korean defense ministry said there have been no military activities it considers suspicious.

The North has threatened to nullify the armistice several times in times of tension with the outside world, and in 1996 the country sent hundreds of armed troops into a border village. The troops later withdrew.

Despite the heightened tension, there were signs of business as usual Monday.

The two Koreas continue to have at least two working channels of communication between their militaries and aviation authorities.

One of those hotlines was used Monday to give hundreds of South Koreans approval to enter North Korea to go to work. Their jobs are at the only remaining operational symbol of joint inter-Korean cooperation, the Kaesong industrial complex. It is operated in North Korea with South Korean money and knowhow and a mostly North Korean work force.

The North Korean rhetoric escalated as the U.N. Security Council last week approved a new round of sanctions over Pyongyang's latest nuclear weapons test Feb. 12.

Analysts said that much of the bellicosity is meant to shore up loyalty among citizens and the military for North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un.

"This is part of their brinksmanship," said Daniel Pinkston, a Seoul-based expert on North Korea with the International Crisis Group think tank. "It's an effort to signal their resolve, to show they are willing to take greater risks, with the expectation that everyone else caves in and gives them what they want."

Part of what North Korea wants is a formal peace treaty to end the Korean War, instead of the armistice that leaves the peninsula still technically in a state of war. It also wants security guarantees and other concessions, direct talks with Washington, recognition as a nuclear weapons state and the removal of 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.

Pinkston said there is little chance of fighting breaking out while war games are being conducted, but he added that he expects North Korea to follow through with a somewhat mysterious promise to respond at a time and place of its own choosing.

North Korea was responsible for an artillery attack that killed four South Koreans in 2010. A South Korean-led international investigation found that North Korea torpedoed a South Korean warship that same year, killing 46 sailors. Pyongyang denies sinking the ship.

Among other threats in the past week, North Korea has warned Seoul of a nuclear war on the divided peninsula and said it was cancelling nonaggression pacts.

South Korean and U.S. officials have been closely monitoring Pyongyang's actions and parsing its recent rhetoric, which has been more warlike than usual.

One analyst said Kaesong's continued operations show that North Korea's cutting of the Red Cross communication channel was symbolic. More than 840 South Koreans were set to cross the border Monday to Kaesong, which provides a badly-needed flow of hard currency to a country where many face food shortages, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

"If South Koreans don't go to work at Kaesong, North Korea will suffer" financially, said analyst Hong Hyun-ik at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea. "If North Korea really intends to start a war with South Korea, it could have taken South Koreans at Kaesong hostage."

Under newly inaugurated President Park Geun-hye, South Korea's Defense Ministry, which often brushes off North Korean threats, has looked to send a message of strength in response to the latest comments from Pyongyang.

The ministry has warned that the North's government would "evaporate from the face of the Earth" if it ever used a nuclear weapon. The White House also said the U.S. is fully capable of defending itself against a North Korean ballistic attack.

On Monday, Park told a Cabinet Council meeting that South Korea should strongly respond to any provocation by North Korea. But she also said Seoul should move ahead with her campaign promise to build up trust with the North.

North Korea has said the U.S. mainland is within the range of its long-range missiles, and an army general told a Pyongyang rally last week that the military is ready to fire a long-range nuclear-armed missile to turn Washington into a "sea of fire."

While outside scientists are still trying to determine specifics, the North's rocket test in December and third atomic bomb test last month may have pushed the country a step closer to acquiring the ability to hit the U.S. with weapons of mass destruction. Analysts, however, say Pyongyang is still years away from acquiring the smaller, lighter nuclear warheads needed for a credible nuclear missile program.

But there are still worries about a smaller conflict, and analysts have said that more missile and nuclear tests are possible reactions from North Korea.

North Korea has a variety of missiles and other weapons capable of striking South Korea. Both the warship sinking and island shelling in 2010 occurred near a western sea boundary between the Koreas that North Korea fiercely disputes. It has been a recurring flashpoint between the rivals that has seen three other bloody naval skirmishes since 1999.

Last week, Kim Jong Un visited two islands just north of the sea boundary and ordered troops there to open fire immediately if a single enemy shell is fired on North Korean waters.

Kim was also quoted as saying his military is fully ready to fight an "all-out war" and that he will order a "just, great advance for national unification" if the enemy makes even a slight provocation, according to the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

Silvio Berlusconi remains hospitalized in Italy

MILAN (AP) ? Former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi remained hospitalized Saturday with an eye inflammation, but court-appointed doctors said the condition was not severe enough to prevent him from attending a hearing in his tax fraud appeal.

San Raffaele hospital's chief ophthalmologist, Francesco Bandello, told reporters that Berlusconi's condition, specifically bilateral uveitis, had only moderately improved overnight and he was expected to remain hospitalized at least until Sunday.

Berlusconi's legal team had submitted petitions to delay the hearing Saturday based on the 76-year-old former premier's medical condition. However, the court ordered a visit by independent physicians, who said the ailments were not so severe as to prevent his attendance. The court continued the hearing.

Berlusconi's defense lawyer Nicolo Ghedini complained that the court was in a hurry to reach a verdict in the case, due March 23. The appeal is on Berlusconi's October conviction on a tax fraud charge relating to the sale of TV rights to air Hollywood movies on his networks. Prosecutors are seeking to uphold the four-year sentence, which includes a five-year ban on public office.

The court "is not interested at all in the fact that there is a sick defendant," Ghedini said. "It seems that the concern is to avoid having the statute of limitations run out and not in a possible acquittal." He said the statute of limitations expire next year. A verdict is only final once a second appeal to Italy's highest court is completed.

On Friday, judges granted a defense petition to delay a hearing in Berlusconi's sensational sex-for-hire trial because of the eye inflammation.

Verdicts in both trials are due in the coming weeks, a politically sensitive time as Italy seeks to negotiate a stable government following inconclusive elections.

Berlusconi's center-right coalition finished second, although the center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani has ruled out joining forces in a sort of grand coalition. Talks on forming a new government are not set to begin before March 20, with Parliament convening for the first time next week followed by elections of leaders in both houses.

(AP) ? Venezuelans will vote April 14 to choose a successor to Hugo Chavez, the elections commission announced Saturday as increasingly strident political rhetoric begins to roil this polarized country.

The constitution mandated the election be held within 30 days of Chavez's March 5 death, but the date picked falls outside that period. Critics of the socialist government already complained that officials violated the constitution by swearing in Vice President Nicolas Maduro as acting leader Friday night.

Some people have speculated Venezuela will not be ready to organize the vote in time, but elections council chief Tibisay Lucena said the country's electronic voting system was fully prepared.

Lucena announced the date on state television while a small inset in the picture showed people filing past Chavez's coffin at the military academy in Caracas, where his body has lain in state since Wednesday.

Chavez's boisterous state funeral Friday often felt like a political rally for his anointed successor, Maduro, who eulogized him by pledging eternal loyalty and vowing Chavez's movement will never be defeated. Maduro is expected to run as the candidate of Chavez's socialist party.

Ramon Guillermo Aveledo, coordinator of the opposition coalition, immediately followed the election announcement by offering his bloc's presidential candidacy to Henrique Capriles, the governor of Miranda state who lost to Chavez in October. A Capriles adviser said the governor would announce his decision Sunday.

David Smilde, an analyst with the U.S.-based Washington Office on Latin America, said the opposition needs to run a candidate in the presidential election even though he believes it will almost certainly lose.

Smilde said he wasn't sure Capriles will accept the candidacy.

"If he says he doesn't want to run I could totally understand that," Smilde said. "He is likely going to lose, and if he loses this election, he's probably going to be done."

In that case the opposition would be wise to run someone such as Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledesma or Henry Falcone, governor of Lara state and one of just three opposition governors, he said.

That would give the opposition an opportunity to clearly articulate its platform and vision.

"Really what this campaign would be about is allowing the opposition to put themselves in position for the future, to show that they have some ideas for the country," Smilde said.

In his speech after his swearing-in Friday, Maduro took shots at the United States, the media, international capitalism and domestic opponents he often depicted as treacherous. He claimed the allegiance of Venezuela's army, referring to them as the "armed forces of Chavez," despite the constitution barring the military from taking sides in politics.

The opposition has denounced the transition as an unconstitutional power grab, while the government moves to immortalize Chavez. Since his death, the former paratrooper has been compared to Jesus Christ and early-19th century Venezuelan liberator Simon Bolivar, and the government announced that his body would be embalmed and put on eternal display.

Edith Palmeira, a 47-year-old Caracas resident at a park Saturday in central Caracas, said she would vote for Maduro, but made clear her allegiance was based purely on her love of Chavez.

"Imitations are never as good as the original," Palmeira said. "But I think he must have grown as a person during so much time at the president's side. He must have learned to be a president."

Elvira Orozco, a 31-year-old business owner, said she planned to sit out the vote to protest Maduro's swearing-in Friday.

"What they want is to say that here there's a democracy, but here they violate the constitution and there's no authority who says anything," Orozco said.

Observers voiced mounting concern about the deep political divide gripping Venezuela, with half of it in a near frenzy of adulation and the other feeling targeted.

"Everything that happened yesterday (with the funeral and Maduro's speech) are outward signs of a fascistic aesthetic, complete with armbands," said Vicente Gonzalez de la Vega, a professor of law at Caracas' Universidad Metropolitana. "It is the cult of the adored leader, an escape from reality. ... They are trying to impose on the rest of the country a new pagan religion."

He said the ruling party was playing with fire with its strong nationalistic rhetoric and the implication that a vote against Maduro was somehow subversive.

Capriles, too, has used emotionally charged language in his public comments. On Friday he denounced Maduro as a shameless liar who had not been elected by the people, and condescendingly referred to him as "boy."

Opposition figures have said they are concerned about the election's fairness, particularly given the public vows of allegiance to Chavez from senior military officials. Capriles lost to Chavez in Oct. 7 elections, but he garnered 45 percent of the vote, which was the most anyone had ever won against the late president.

A boycott of 2005 legislative elections was widely seen as disastrous for the opposition, letting Chavez's supporters win all 167 seats and allowing him to govern unimpeded by any legislative rivals.
