Ford Posts Record Q2 Profits, Up Almost 19%, Surpasses Expectations, All Regions Profitable Except Europe

'Good job, Al", "Thanks Bill"

?Good job, Al?, ?Thanks Bill?

For the 16th consecutive quarter, Ford Motor Co. profits have risen, with the Dearborn automaker reporting a 2nd quarter 2013 profit of $1.23 billion, up 18.6% from 2012, working out to 45? per share, exceeding analysts? projections of 37 cents a share. Pretax profit for the quarter was up 40% to $2.56 billion. The company said that it set records for pre-tax profits in both the 2nd quarter and 1st half of 2013, making $4.8 billion in the first six months of the year.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally attributed the company?s success to his One Ford plan. ?Our strong second quarter results in every region around the world is another proof point that our One Ford plan is continuing to deliver and is building momentum.?

After losing over $30 billion from 2006 to 2008 as the American car industry melted down, Ford will have its fifth profitable year in a row.

Revenue was also up, 14.4% to $38.1 billion. The good quarterly results caused Ford to raise predictions for the full year. FoMoCo expects now to make more than the $8 billion it made last year and anticipates that the U.S. car and light truck market will surpass 15.5 million units, perhaps even reaching 16 million. Sales were also good in the 2nd quarter, up 15%, gaining Ford nearly 1% additional market share in the U.S. Average transaction prices were also up, ~$1,400 a vehicle, and Ford?s profit margin in the North American market of 10.4% leads all major manufacturers. The only negative part of Ford?s report was that incentives were up by $500 a vehicle, more than the industry average.

North America still remains the engine driving Ford?s profits, with the company reporting a $2.3 billion profit in that region. Europe, where car sales are the lowest they?ve been in two decades, dragged down global profits, but Ford CFO Bob Shanks said that the region is improving earlier than expected. Ford lost $348 million in Europe during the 2nd quarter, an improvement of over $50 million, and it also revised its 2013 projections for Europe, expecting loses to match last year?s $1.8 billion of red ink, instead of the $2 billion previously projected. Ford is restructuring its European operations and reducing overcapacity with three plants slated to close by early 2014.

News was better from the combined Asia Pacific Africa operations which reported record quarterly profits for the region of $177 million, a turnaround from a $66 million loss last year. South America also did well for Ford, posting $151 million in profits.

Detroit manager scores first win over unions in bankruptcy bid

By Bernie Woodall and Joseph Lichterman

DETROIT (Reuters) - A U.S. bankruptcy court judge on Wednesday dealt a blow to Detroit's public employee unions and pension funds opposed to the city's historic bankruptcy filing by suspending legal challenges in Michigan state courts while he reviews the city's petition for protection from creditors.

Judge Steven Rhodes ordered three lawsuits filed by city workers, retirees and pension funds be halted and extended that stay to suits against Michigan's governor, treasurer and Detroit's emergency manager. Rhodes' action ensures that the only path to fight the city's Chapter 9 bankruptcy petition runs through his courtroom in downtown Detroit.

It also sets the stage for what is expected to be a protracted and bruising battle over the city's eligibility to restructure more than $18 billion in debt and pension and healthcare liabilities under the broad protections of federal bankruptcy law.

"It gives us one venue to settle our disputes. This brings it into one court where it should be," said Bill Nowling, a spokesman for Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr, who attended the oral arguments before Rhodes on Wednesday morning but did not return for the judge's ruling from the bench in the afternoon.

The city's unions and pension funds had hoped to keep the fight in state court, where they felt Michigan's constitutional protections of retiree benefits would prevail against efforts by Orr to scale them back. Now, barring an appeal of the Rhodes ruling, their fight likely turns to convincing the judge that Orr has not dealt with them in good faith in negotiations since he was appointed by state officials in March.

"Stay or no stay, we will never stop fighting for Detroit and its workers," Al Garrett, president of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 25, Detroit's biggest union, said in a statement.

Union members in the packed courtroom held their heads in their hands or shook their heads as Rhodes ruled against them on all three of the motions at issue in the day's proceedings. Meanwhile, city firefighters, worried that the bankruptcy case will lead to stinging cuts in their retirement benefits, protested outside.

Ironically, Wednesday's launch of the bankruptcy case began exactly 312 years after the settlement that became Detroit was founded in 1701 by French soldier Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, after whom the iconic Cadillac automobile brand was named when the city grew to be the cradle of the U.S. automotive industry.

Detroit, which also gave birth to the music industry's Motown sound in the 1960s, has struggled for decades as companies moved or closed, crime became rampant and its population shriveled by almost two-thirds since the 1950s to about 700,000 at present. The city's revenue failed to keep pace with spending, leading to years of budget deficits and a dependence on borrowing to stay afloat.

PROVE INSOLVENCY, GOOD FAITH

The immediate next step in the case now is a procedural hearing before Rhodes set for August 2. At some point after that, Rhodes will preside over formal hearings to determine whether Detroit is eligible to declare bankruptcy. The city's Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy petition is the largest in U.S. history.

The next phase of the case involves the city proving that it is insolvent. The city will also have to prove it made a good-faith effort to negotiate with its creditors or that there are too many creditors to make negotiating possible.

In his initial court filing last week, Orr said the pool of potential creditors, including current city workers, retirees, and bondholders, is vast and it would have been essentially impossible to negotiate with each of them outside of the Chapter 9 process.

In a signal that the judge is going to press both sides into hard negotiations, Rhodes has proposed the appointment of a federal judge as mediator in the case.

Gerald Rosen, chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, can direct parties in the case to mediate and designate other mediators, according to the proposed order, which also said information from the mediation sessions would not be disclosed or placed in evidence. Rosen's appointment will be at issue during the August 2 hearing.

Detroit has more than $18 billion of debt and unfunded liabilities it is seeking to restructure, some at rates as low as pennies on the dollar, according to Orr's preliminary offer to creditors last month. Roughly half its liabilities stem from retirement benefits, including $5.7 billion in liabilities for healthcare and other retiree benefits and a $3.5 billion pension liability.

Orr wants to wrap up the city's bankruptcy case by September 2014, but the process for determining a municipality's eligibility for bankruptcy, which in Detroit's case may involve arguments concerning the state constitutionality of the filing, could drag on. In Stockton, California's case, it took almost a year.

Uganda July coffee exports seen edging 3 pct lower yr/yr: UCDA

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Uganda expects its July coffee exports to fall 3 percent to 300,000 60-kg bags compared with the same month in 2012 due to unfavourable weather conditions, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) said in a report seen by Reuters on Monday.

"In Central Region, the weather has been generally very hot and dry... there were fears that the hostile weather may affect development of the coffee berries and consequently reduce volume and quality of coffee expected to be picked next harvest season," state-run UCDA said in its June monthly report.

Uganda's coffee season runs from October to September and central and eastern regions together account for 55 percent of the country's annual coffee output.

OTTAWA?-?

Let the second-guessing begin.

On the heels of a deal to allow NHLers to compete in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Team Canada and Hockey USA both unveiled their orientation camp rosters Monday, with three Senators in a position to earn spots once the final squads are named.

Defenceman Marc Methot was the lone Senator named to Team Canada?s orientation camp on Monday, leaving Sens fans stung and scratching their heads over a perceived snub to star centre Jason Spezza.

After accompanying Team Canada as a reserve on a disastrous trip to Turin in 2006, Spezza was passed over on the initial invite list for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

He was eventually invited to camp after an injury to Ryan Getzlaf and Joe Sakic?s retirement, but didn?t make the final cut.

At the time, Spezza said he used that snub as motivation.

?It definitely opens your eyes a little bit and puts a little bit of fire in the belly, when you don?t get named to something like that,? he told reporters at the time. ?Maybe the way it?s worked out might be a blessing in disguise.?

Yet there was no disguising Methot?s excitement, with the defenceman thanking fans for the ?Twitter love,? which he said made up for an ?awful? day on the links.

Methot wore the Maple Leaf at the World Championships in 2011 and 2012 when he was still with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and will attend his first Olympic orientation camp August 25-28 in Calgary.

Both goaltender Craig Anderson and newly-acquired sniper Bobby Ryan were extended invites to Team USA?s camp in Arlington, Va.

Anderson, one of six American goalies invited to camp, represented his home country at the World Championships in 2006 and again in 2008.

At 26, Ryan is already a veteran of the international circuit, earning a silver medal in Vancouver, and competing for Team USA at the 2006 World Juniors and last year?s World Championships.

Robin Lehner and Erik Karlsson were previously announced as invitees to Team Sweden?s camp.

As I?ve pondered this, I often wonder what it is that Amazon summaries, inside hardback covers, introductory chapters, and of course, the blogs don?t tell you about the process of writing a book.

Making Money Off Other Sites With Successful Internet Marketing ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Marketing by way of the internet can be a tricky process in the beginning, especially when you?re competing with so many other companies offering the same products. The basic point for Affiliate marketing comes down to choosing various forms to market and promote, and then assuring they are set up to the best of your ability. Use the advice offered in this article to help you devise an Website marketing strategy.

Flashy websites may be attention grabbing, but they are also distracting. You only have a short period of time to capture the attention of a new visitor to your website, and you don?t want those precious seconds to be wasted on them trying to figure out how to navigate your site. They?ll eventually click away and never return. If you can?t cement their interest in that period, they will more than likely move on.

A product FAQ is a must for your site. Provide a well-thought-out response for each question, and don?t be afraid to self-sell where appropriate. Just be sure to avoid making it look like an advertisement by going overboard with product suggestions.

TIP! Avoid too much dazzle on your website because it can be very distracting. You have roughly five seconds to get the attention of visitors to your site.

The Internet is not the only place to use Website marketing. Invite bloggers to conferences so you can meet them in person. Knowing your market cannot be underestimated, so use your blog and the online community to get to know the other players and customers that are out there.

Like any other business endeavor, internet promotion required dedication and knowledge. Find an adviser who you trust and seek their assistance. Most people who are good in web marketing give free services or charge a small fee. Also, pick a system you want to follow, and stick with it. It may start slow, but it is worth the time you put into it.

An excellent suggestion for improved affiliate marketing practices that many webmasters fail to recognize is to make your website simple yet effective. Professional website designers often use multimedia tools such as Microsoft Silverlight and Adoble Flash as ways of tempting novice website owners. Good web designers consider that some visitors to their site will not have the most up to date technology. A website should work well and serve its purpose, without resorting to lots of fancy devices.

TIP! To increase your ad clicks, place an image on your page that, when clicked, leads to a page that describes the item you are advertising or selling. When including text use the same font and font size that is used in your article.

Give site visitors the option of signing up for your newsletter or e-zine. This can be a smart technique to help you maintain an interactive relationship with your website visitors and prospective customers. Add personality with photographs of you and your family or staff. You should let them know about the people who run your company. Arouse their curiosity with an interesting subject line in the Ezine, such as the easiest or fastest way to achieve a specific goal.

While internet promotion has some commonality with other strategies, it differs in some substantial ways. For example, search engines might decide to stop taking the title tag into consideration. Marketing your product through means like youtube may be another good option if such a change takes place.

Keep your eye on the prize. As mentioned in the beginning of the article, taking time to assure yourself everything is set up the best way possible will provide a huge difference in your business. You will reap the benefits in the future by following this advice!

TIP! Whatever you do, make your website stand out among the rest. You?ll need to ensure your site stands out from the rest to drive visitor traffic.

US and, EU Pose as Honest Brokers While Backing Egypt?s Military Assault on Democracy

'Egypt?s transition to civilian government culminating in the June 2012 presidential election of Mohamed Morsi was far from perfect. Nevertheless, the inescapable fact is that Morsi was legally elected. His deposition under orders from the Supreme Council of Armed Forces can only be defined as a coup.

What we see emerging is an authoritarian civilian front for the military deep state.?The hypocrisy of the US and Europe is breathtaking. Not a mention of military coup or massacres, but fulsome talk about inclusivity and transition.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns told his Egyptian hosts: ?I did not come with American solutions, nor did I come to lecture anyone. We will not try to impose our model on Egypt.? With these words, the American diplomat was justifying the military subversion of Egypt?s tentative political process and the ongoing annual subsidy of $1.3 billion in US military aid.'

NASA's Aqua satellite captured an image of California's Mountain Fire on July 18 as the satellite passed overhead in space.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard Aqua captured an image of the smoke and heat from California's Mountain Fire on July 18 at 21:00 UTC (5 p.m. EDT/2 p.m. PDT). MODIS has the ability to detect hot spots or fires and they appear red in the image. At the time of the image, the light brown smoke plume was blowing west-northwest.

The Mountain Fire started on July 15 at 1:43 p.m. near the junction of Highway 243 and Highway 74. The topography of the burning area is very steep and rugged. The fire is located in the southern portion of the San Jacinto Wilderness along the Desert Divide.

The Incident Information System called InciWeb noted that evacuations have been ordered. There are evacuations for the Idyllwild and Fern Valley area (not including Pine Cove, Mountain Center, and Poppet Flats). Evacuations also include the San Jacinto State Park Wilderness, Forest Service Wilderness and Forest Service Campgrounds. As of July 18, 22,800 acres have burned and the fire was reported at 15 percent containment. For more updates on this fire, visit the InciWeb page: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3516/.

Stocks slip after record highs; Dow down 33 points

    markets

Stocks finished largely unchanged in lackluster trading Friday, with the S&P 500 squeezing out a small gain to finish at another record high, but a batch of disappointing tech earnings weighed down the market.

(Read more: Ultrawealthyinvestors turn bullish on stocks)

Despite the limp session, the Dow and S&P still logged their fourth-straight week higher.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 4 points lower, dragged by Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard.

The S&P 500 eked out a gain to close at a record high, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq ended in the red. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, fell below 13.

Among key S&P sectors, techs led the laggards, while health care gained.

Google and Microsoft tumbled after both tech giants disappointed the market after the closing bell Thursday with quarterly earnings and revenue that fell well below Wall Street expectations. At least eight brokerages slashed their price targets on Google, while seven cut their price targets on Microsoft.

(Read More:Microsoft, Google disappoint; shares pay the price)

Also among techs Advanced Micro Devices tumbled more than 10 percent after the chipmaker said its gross margins would fall, even as the company forecast better-than-expected revenue growth in the third quarter. Analysts were mixed on the stock: at least five brokerages raised their price targets on the company, while Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley lowered their ratings.

(Read More: Market at new high despite some earnings misses)

Offsetting the losses in the tech sector, General Electric jumped to lead the Dow gainers after the conglomerate posted earnings that edged past expectations by a penny a share.

So far, one-fifth of S&P 500 companies have reported quarterly results, with 65 percent of companies posting earnings above estimates, while 51 percent missing expectations, according to the latest data from Thomson Reuters. If all remaining companies report earnings in line with forecasts, earnings will be up 2.9 percent from last year's second quarter.

Barry Knapp, head of equity portfolio strategy at Barclays noted that domestically orientated U.S. stocks have outperformed this quarter.

"This quarter, domestic revenues are starting to go up, which makes perfect sense given those stocks have been telling you that for six months. Companies with foreign-derived revenues remain under pressure," he said.

(Read More:Will earnings punch a hole in the US stock rally?)

The Dow and the S&P set fresh highs on Thursday, after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke reiterated his commitment to easy monetary policy, in his second day of testimony before lawmakers.

"What we do know with more certainty is that in September the Fed is going to slow its asset purchases," said Knapp.

Beyond the U.S., markets will also watch a meeting of G-20 finance ministers in Moscow on Friday and Saturday to see if global policy makers can do anything further to calm recent volatility and boost global growth.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will be in attendance. Ahead of the meeting, Lew said the U.S.was once more a "source of strength" in the global economy.

"The U.S. is again a source of strength in the world economy, only five years after it was the center of a global crisis. This has not happened by accident," said Lew in an opinion piece published by the Financial Times. "In many parts of the world, such as Europe, growth is too weak to drive job creation, and it is critical to take steps to bolster private hiring."

Meanwhile, the Nikkei fell from a two-month peak on Friday, as investors unwound long positions in the futures and cash market ahead of upper house elections over the weekend. Other Asian stocks also reversed gains, with the Shanghai Composite easing over 1.5 percent and Australia's S&P ASX 200 index retreating further from the 5,000 mark.

More questions from Congress on surveillance

(AP) ? Six weeks after a leaked document exposed the scope of the government's surveillance of Americans' phone records, many Democrats and some Republicans are still angry about it.

On Wednesday, key administration figures from the intelligence world will appear before the House Judiciary Committee to answer another round of questions.

The questioners include Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, the Republican who sponsored the USA Patriot Act, which governs the collection of phone records. Sensenbrenner has said he was "extremely troubled" by the administration's legal interpretation that permitted the government to gather hundreds of millions of Americans' phone records.

Shortly after the surveillance was revealed, Rep. John Conyers, the panel's ranking Democrat, said he feared "that we are on the verge of becoming a surveillance state."

"Over the past decade ? under the leadership of four chairman with diverse political views ? the members of this committee have vigorously debated the proper balance between our safety and our constitutional right to privacy," Conyers said in remarks prepared for Wednesday's hearing. "We never ? at any point during this debate ? approved the type of unchecked, sweeping surveillance of United States citizens employed by our government in the name of fighting the war on terrorism."

Those facing the committee will include Deputy Attorney General James Cole and National Security Agency deputy director John C. Inglis. The others testifying on behalf of the administration are Robert S. Litt, general counsel in the Office of Director of National Intelligence, and Stephanie Douglas, executive assistant director of the FBI's National Security Branch.

Members on both sides of the aisle are likely to look for clear answers on why, in the Obama administration's view, the gathering of all phone records is lawful.

The committee also will hear from administration critics, among them Jameel Jaffer of the American Civil Liberties Union. Jaffer, the group's deputy legal director, said in testimony prepared for Wednesday's hearing that excessive secrecy on surveillance issues "has made congressional oversight difficult and public oversight impossible."

Kate Martin, director of the Center for National Security Studies, said in prepared testimony that the "massive" collection of information on Americans is unprecedented and that the surveillance of Americans "poses a significant and perhaps unprecedented challenge to our system of constitutional checks and balances."

Strange new dinosaur discovered in Utah

A new, unusual-looking dinosaur, Nasutoceratops, offers evidence of how horned dinosaurs might have evolved in North America.

    By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / July 17, 2013

Nasutoceratops had huge, curved horns and a humongous nose.

An unusual dinosaur from Utah?s Cretaceous period has been categorized as a new genus, offering a new portrait of two distinct dinosaur communities in what is now the western United States.

Described in a study published in the current issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B,?Nasutoceratops titusi, or "big-nose, horn-face," is named for its most significant features: the two enormous horns protruding from its head and its prodigious snout. It the first from the group of short-frilled, horned dinosaurs to have been found in the American south, revising previous theories that those dinosaurs lived only in the north.

?It?s not every day you find a whole new group of dinosaurs,? says Scott Sampson, a paleontologist at The Denver Museum of Nature & Sciences and the lead author on the study, in a phone interview. ?And this is a linchpin to demonstrate that there were distinct dinosaur communities in the north and south.?

Nasutoceratops?s nose is the biggest of that of any known dinosaur in the triceratops family, to which this new species belongs. But the part of the nose that is enlarged is not related to its sense of smell, and scientists are still unsure how its size benefited the animal, Sampson said.

Still, scientists are fairly confident that the humongous horns ? the largest in the family in relative terms, as the Nasutoceratops?s five-foot-long head is about half the size of that of other dinosaurs in the group ? were used for mating purposes.

?The horns were not used to beat up on predators,? said Dr. Sampson. ?The horns were to compete for mates?to attract members of the opposite sex, and to intimidate or possibly fight members of the same sex.?

Like other dinosaurs in the triceratops family, the quadrupedal herbivore, which measured about 15 feet and weighed some 2 tons, has a frill on its head, like a misshapen halo backlighting its face.?

In addition to adding a bizarre new creature to the dinosaur roster, the find also adds new evidence to the idea that the western edge of what is now the United States and Canada was once home to two contemporaneous communities of dinosaurs.

The story begins at the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument area in Utah, where the Nasutoceratops fossil was recovered in 2006. Some 75 million years ago that now arid landscape was thick with greenery and girdled with marshes. That region is known as southern Laramidia, the westernmost island that resulted when elevated sea levels during the Late Cretaceous period split the North American landmass into separate islands.

Almost all the dinosaurs found in southern Laramidia are of a different species than their family counterparts in the north. The?addition of the Nasutoceratops?to the Cretaceous period ecosystem in the south now adds one more species to the list of novel dinosaurs that lived there.

Scientists now believe that northern and southern horned dinosaurs diverged geographically and then evolved at the same time but separately from each other for about one million years. The results of that separate evolution were distinct dinosaur species: the horned dinosaurs in northern Laramidia developed fancy frills, with huge, boney knobs protruding from their halos, and small horns on their heads. Their southern counterpart, Nasutoceratops, has a less ornate frills and massive horns very unlike those found in that subfamily.

Much is still unknown about why the north and south dinosaurs did not intermingle, especially in such a small plot of land.

?We?re not sure that was stopping those Utah dinosaurs from migrating north and replacing the Alberta dinosaurs,? said Mark Loewen, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum of Utah and a co-author on the study.

One possibility is differences in vegetation between the two areas, said Loewen, noting that planet preferences could have led the dinosaurs to stay in their locale.

?Its still a mystery that?s yet to be solved,? he said.

KIK Cards is keeping KIK from updating their app on Windows Phone

    kik-cards

The KIK app was last updated in February 2012 and VOIP specialist TruTowers have decided to ask KIK what?s going on.

It turns out the issue is KIK Cards, small HTML5-based mini-apps that are embedded inside the KIK app which can be used for playing games, searching for YouTube videos and more.

Kik Messenger CEO Ted Livingston told TruTowers in a phone interview that the problem was due to Microsoft ignoring Webkit support on Windows Phone.

Livingston said it?s ?not fair to developers to ask them to support WP? when it would require extra and unnecessary work to port the Card-based features to Windows Phone that are already openly supported by both iOS and Android.

Livingston said that Kik wanted to ?do what?s best for the user? and having a unified standard across all platforms would certainly improve the user experience.

?If Microsoft puts Webkit on Windows Phone,? Livingston told us, ?we?ll develop for [the platform].?

While we can sympathize with KIK not wanting to test across multiple rendering engines, it seems KIK is coding to one rendering engine rather than to the HTML5 standard itself, and could be painting themselves into a corner should Apple or Google for example suddenly update or change their rendering engine.

This preoccupation has resulted in Microsoft spoofing Webkit support in IE11, which may force developers to actually test their apps rather than automatically assume the IE rendering engine can not do the job.

    Thanks? B for the tip.
