DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. I haven't led a perfect life either, and I have my own skeletons and things that I would never mention. But still, I can't get over this. ...
I have always been a fan of Lidia Bastianich. Her recipes are easy to make Italian food that are good enough to serve to company. I have watched Lidia cook on her show and she really knows how to feed her family. I have been to some of her restaurants in New York City and all I can say is ?Wow?!
When I received her new book, Lidia?s Favorite Recipes, I didn?t know what to cook first. This wonderful collection of 100 recipes are Lidia?s ?go to recipes? adored by her family and friends. Some of Lidia?s favorite recipes have also become my favorite recipes.
Last week, I made? Straw and Hay, which is a colorful pasta dish with crispy peas, prosciutto and creamy sauce. As elegant as it sounds, it only took 30 minutes to make. It was the perfect weeknight meal and I will be making it again and again.
The holidays are coming and I can?t wait to try some of the appetizers. From Fried Mozzarella Skewers to Lobster Salad with Fresh Tomatoes, there is just one good recipe after another. These recipes are for the beginning cook to the most experienced home chef.
Besides all the great recipes in the cookbook, there is also a website where you can get cooking tips, recipes and videos. If you love Italian food, you will need to visit Lidia?s Italy.

Scanadu, the 2-year-old San Francisco startup aiming to develop a handheld medical scanner for home use, similar to the Star Trek tricorder, has unveiled its first three products, set for release by the end of 2013.
The Scanadu SCOUT is the central scanner component. The NASA Ames Research Center-based company says that customers simply hold the small, lightweight device to the patient?s temple and it will return five vital sign results with 99 percent accuracy in less than 10 seconds.
?Consumers? attention deficit is increasing,? CEO Walter de Brouwer told MobiHealthNews in an interview last month. ?And if they have a device that can do diagnostics, they are not willing to spend more than 10 seconds waiting. They?d like to have real time, they?ll settle for 10 seconds, but a minute would be too long.?
The data from the scan will be uploaded to a Scanadu app via Bluetooth and will track pulse transit time, heart rate, electrical heart activity, body temperature, heart rate variability, and blood oxygenation. The company plans to sell the device for less than $150, and the firmware will be remotely upgradable, allowing Scanadu to add new scanning metrics in the future.
?We found in user testing that the consumer doesn?t want to go through the ritual of the doctor checkup,? de Brouwer told MobiHealthNews. ?The consumer wants one position on the body. And he wants to do the diagnostics all in that one position. And the consumer is price-specific. For the consumer, the price sensitivity will be very high.?
In addition to the SCOUT, the company announced two ?low-cost and disposable early detection tools,? which will be integrated with the Scanadu app.
Project ScanaFlo will be used to conduct urinalysis. Customers can buy an over-the-counter disposable cartridge, and the software will test urine for preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, kidney failure and urinary tract infections. Pregnant women will also be able to scan for pregnancy complications or to monitor their health throughout the pregnancy.
Project ScanaFlu, meanwhile, will analyze saliva in cases of cold-like symptoms. It will test for Strep A, Influenza A and B, adenovirus, and RSV.
Scanadu plans to submit the products to the FDA for review as soon as next week. De Brouwer said that as a medical device with a consumer-focused use case, it?s not clear whether the FDA will consider the device unique. The SCOUT goes into manufacturing next month, freeing up the company?s team to work on the software side, particularly the user interface.
Scanadu also stressed in the announcement that Scanadu can be used by healthy customers, too, to monitor personal average vitals, so that when a person does get sick doctors have more information about what?s normal for that individual.
Dr. Alan Greene, Chief Medical Officer at Scanadu, said in a statement, ?Health decisions shouldn?t be based on averages, they should be based on a real, accurate and personalized healthfeed of data ? which we now have the power to give to the consumer in the palm of their hand.?
Scanadu is one of the more visible companies competing in the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize, a competition to develop a device much like this one. The announced vitals the SCOUT can read line up fairly closely with the draft guidelines for the prize, with the exception of respiratory rate. De Brouwer said the device can read respiratory rate, but not within Scanadu?s self-imposed 10-second window. He said a marketable consumer product is a higher priority than the prize, which is still a year out from its first judging round.
De Brouwer believes Scanadu will be just one step in a personal health revolution.
?This is the beginning of a nascent industry of personal healthcare and consumer health. The first time in my life I?ve seen this excitement was with the personal computer, the second time was with the Internet and now it?s about health,? de Brouwer said.
He said he wants this product to change the relationship consumers of health care have with providers, making consumers the keepers of their own health information.
?Now we treat doctors as accountants who have to keep records for us,? he said. ?They were not trained to do this. What they were trained to be was an analyst of data, to give us their point of view, their therapy.?
Raileigh really enjoys playing board games.? We frequently have family game nights, and she will often request to play a game together before heading off to bed for the night.? Since Darren and I are board game lovers ourselves, we are usually happy to oblige her request.?
Recently, we have been playing Elefun Snackin' Safari.? This is a new addition to the Elefun and Friends line of games-- a collection that is made specifically with preschoolers in mind.
The game comes with 13 snack cards-- 6 orange, 6 green, and one golden tutti frutti snack cake card.? There are also 2 home base cards and 2 Snackin' Safari elephant heads, handles, and trunks {which you assemble together}.? The game is meant to be played by two players.
There are several ways to play Elefun Snackin' Safari.? ALL of them will get you up and moving.? This is one of my favorite aspects of the game, as there aren't many board games that require any real physical activity.
Our favorite way to play Elefun Snackin' Safari is really easy, actually.? You spread out all 13 of the snack cards randomly on the floor.? Put each of the home base cards on opposite sides of the room. ? Grab your elephant with his attached springy truck and go to home base, then start bouncing your elephant?s trunk on the snack cards to pick up a tasty snack! Once it?s caught, run back to home base and drop it off, then get back to the snackin? as quick as you can! Make a pile of snacks, and if your pile is the biggest at the end, you win!
In addition to this method of play, you can turn all the cards upside down and require players to look for cards of a certain color.? Or, you can go on a mission to find the special tutti frutti snack-- the first one to find it wins!
I really like that there are so many variations of game play.? It keeps the game interesting and exciting.? Though we tend to play our favorite version most often, it's also nice to mix things up a bit sometimes.
Now-- there is one thing that I don't love about the game.? I have a hard time with those Snackin' Safari elephant heads.? Meaning, no matter how hard or soft I spring them, it can be difficult to get them to stick onto the snack cards.? The suction is strong, so I think it's more of an issue with aim.? I just worry that if my aim isn't good enough, then most kids might have a problem with it as well.
Regardless, Raileigh LOVES this game.? She asks to play Elefun Snackin' Safari almost daily and enjoys collecting all the cute snack cards as we play.
Elefun Snackin' Safari is sure to be a hot item with preschoolers this year, so make sure to pick up your copy of this game for all the little ones in your life!

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario ? Target will sponsor a tour across Canada that will visit more than 20 communities ahead of the planned opening of its stores in the country, the mass-merchandise retailer said Tuesday.
The tour will start in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and conclude in British Columbia in the middle of December. Target plans to open 124 stores in Canada starting in March and April 2013.
"We are excited to be celebrating the holidays with Canadians from coast to coast," Target Canada director of marketing Livia Zufferli said. "We've planned surprises in more than 20 communities across the country in the hopes of creating unforgettable memories and giving Canadians a taste of what they can expect when Target opens in 2013."
Target purchased the leases for the Zellers store chain from the Hudson's Bay Co. in January 2011. Since then, it has worked to convert the stores to Target stores and also boosted its presence in Canada. On Nov. 6, the company announced it would sponsor a competition for up-and-coming Canadian fashion designers, and last week, it announced it would donate up to $1 million to Canadian charities through its Give With Target program.

It?s been a long while since William Caxton set up his first printing press in Westminster and provided a mechanism to help spread the written word that would eventually strike at the heart of Reformation England. Caxton?s invention in 1483 allowed for the mass production of printed matter which, in time challenged the authority of the established church, lead to the publication of?the King James Bible, and brought about the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.
William Caxton, inventor of the printing press
Today, we are standing on the shoulders of this great giant.?As Caxton transformed important words into powerful messages through innovation in technology over 500 years ago, so we now must learn to do similar with big data ? that?collection of?data sets?so large and complex that it has become difficult to process using on-hand database management tools -?in the 21st century.
But, is the time right?
We?ve now had around 20 years of the commercial Internet with organisations embracing innovation to find new markets globally, provide a better service to their customers, simplify processes, and generally make life easier. The explosion of social media has made our personal and business relationships more interactive online, but we are faced with the enormity of information overkill that makes any informed decisions difficult.
How do we make sense of big data,?prioristise what?s important, value and secure it?
Start-ups are among those best placed to make the most of new technology, but they may be stopped in their tracks by more established players who will protect their own interests. Many small businesses will find it difficult to defend legal challenges to intellectual property rights or stop large corporate organisations from using IP laws to restrict consumer behaviour in particular markets.
Dealing with big data brings a whole plethora of legal problems such as intellectual property rights; interoperability; licensing; platforms and processing, and services out. Who is responsible for big data, is it accurate and will algorithms that drive the data be accessible or remain commercially sensitive? Can we anonymise data so that it doesn?t breach privacy and data protection rules?
A 2011?McKinsey?report?suggests suitable technologies include?A/B testing,?association rule learning,?classification, luster analysis,?crowd sourcing,data fusion?and?integration,?ensemble learning,?genetic algorithms,?machine learning, natural language processing,?neural networks,pattern recognition,?anomaly detection,?predictive modelling,?regression,?sentiment analysis,?signal processing,?supervised?and unsupervised learning,?simulation,?time series analysis?and?visualisation.
Additional technologies being applied to big data include massively parallel-processing (MPP) databases,?search-based applications, data-mining grids, distributed file systems, distributed databases, cloud computing platforms, the Internet, and scalable storage systems.
But whilst big data may be difficult to work with using relational databases and desktop statistics and visualization packages, requiring instead massively parallel software running on tens, hundreds, or even thousands of servers, let?s not forget the end game. Everything organisations do, irrespective of size or sector must be viable financially and serve the bottom line. Solutions therefore need to be scalable and reflect the value in the big data being collected.
Caxton?s simple printing press changed the world. We?ve just got to make it a smarter planet.
ROME (AP) -Police are investigating whether anti-Semitism was behind a brutal attack early Thursday on Tottenham fans out drinking ahead of their team's Europa League match against Lazio. At least one person was stabbed and seven were taken to the hospital, police and witnesses said.
In an apparently well-organized assault, some 50 masked hooligans wielding cobblestones, metal bars and knives attacked the British fans and trashed the "The Drunken Ship" pub in Rome's Campo de' Fiori square, a popular drinking spot where Tottenham fans had gathered on the eve of the game.
Lazio fans were widely suspected, but the club said Thursday there was no proof its supporters were involved and the ANSA news agency reported that one supporter from crosstown rival AS Roma had been arrested. In a statement, Lazio noted that the hooligans' faces were covered, insisted that its fans had been behaving recently and called for a full investigation.
Tottenham supporters are often called the "Yid Army" and the team is known to have a large Jewish fan base from north London. Lazio fans are traditionally right-wing and often use fascist salutes and slogans. Witnesses said the hooligans shouted "Jew" during the attack.
Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno called for tough justice for those responsible for what he called a "terrible and disgusting" attack. "The anti-Semitic hypothesis increases the seriousness of the aggression," he said in a statement.
Rome police say they detained some of the 50 or so attackers, but acknowledged many got away. Fifteen people were identified and searches were under way Thursday at their homes, police said in a statement.
Blood stained the cobblestones outside the bar, windows and mirrors were smashed and stools and tables were overturned.
"They penned them in the back and they threw everything at them: cobblestones, metal rods, metal bolts, pieces of belts," bar owner Marco Manzi told The Associated Press after returning to survey the damage Thursday morning.
He said the attack seemed well organized, with groups converging on the pub from two directions, their faces covered with motorcycle helmets and scarves, and armed with "every possible thing."
The brawl began sometime after 1 a.m. and was over within 20 minutes, Manzi said. Police said those hospitalized were British men, aged 20-60. One emerged from the hospital Thursday afternoon with a black eye and a bandaged head and foot.
Manzi claimed police were virtually absent from the brawl, though police disputed that and officials noted that pubs have their own private security. Often a police van or two is stationed just a few meters (yards) from "The Drunken Ship," since fights regularly break out in the piazza frequented at night by American exchange students, tourists and young Italians.
"There was a total absence of law enforcement," Manzi said.
He said after the brawl ended inside the pub, the attackers escaped and knifed another victim about 20 meters (yards) away, down a small cobblestone street.
Police said in their statement that their patrol units on duty in Campo de' Fiori alerted headquarters as soon as the fight broke out and that "all available patrols," an ambulance and police reinforcements were quickly sent.
Lazio said it hoped those responsible would be quickly identified so that its fans wouldn't be subject to "unjust" suspicions.
"Lazio fans have shown in recent times to have totally abandoned shows of cowardice and gratuitous physical violence," it said in a statement. "Episodes like what happened last night have nothing to do with football."

I spoke with Joe Weisenthal at Business Insider yesterday. He wrote a way too nice article and included some of our conversation: The Genius Who Invented Economics Blogging Reveals How He Got Everything Right And What's Coming Next
Genius? Hardly. I just paid attention and put 2 plus 2 together.
And I didn't get "everything right", but I did get most of the US macro trends correct over the last 8 years. I started blogging in January 2005, and most of my early posts were about housing, as an example: Housing: Speculation is the Key
And I definitely didn't invent economics blogging. Barry Ritholtz and others were ahead of me.
In the interview, I mentioned the "doomer" mentality. Many people now think of the '90s as a great decade for the economy - and it was. But there were doomsday predictions every year. As an example, in 1994 Larry Kudlow was arguing the Clinton tax increases would lead to a severe recession or even Depression. Wrong. By the end of the '90s, there were many people concerned about the stock bubble and I shared that concern, but there were doomers every year (mostly wrong).
In the Business Insider interview, I said: "I?m not a roaring bull, but looking forward, this is the best shape we?ve been in since ?97". Obviously the economy is still sluggish, and the unemployment rate is very high at 7.9%, but I was looking forward. I mentioned the downside risks from Europe and US policymakers (the fiscal slope), but I think the next few years could see a pickup in growth.
In the article I highlighted two of the reasons I expect a pickup in growth that I've mentioned before on the blog; a further increase in residential investment, and the end of the drag from state and local government cutbacks.
I also mentioned an excellent piece on autos from David Rosenberg back in early 2009. His piece made me think about auto sales - and I came to a different conclusion than Rosenberg, see: Vehicle Sales. I started expecting auto sales to bottom, and that led me to be more optimistic for the 2nd half of 2009.
I enjoyed talking with Joe - although he was way too nice - and, yes, that is a picture of me.
Was it submerged after the satellite made its sweep? Did those volcanic-black pixels crumble and drown under their own weight? Have military censors deliberately obscured the truth? Australian explorers who sailed the South Pacific for 25 days in search of the landmass known as Sandy Island, after spotting it on Google Earth, have returned none-the-wiser. And it's not just Google that is apparently inaccurate -- a Coral Sea island in the same position also appears on Yahoo, Bing and even iOS maps, as well as on the Times Atlas of the World under the eerily appropriate name of Sable Island, which could be interpreted as "Very Dark Black Island."
The depth of the ocean is around 1,400 meters at these coordinates (-19.225583, 159.938759), which is precisely why the the University of Sydney's maritime researchers went looking -- it would be an extremely unusual outcrop if it actually existed. One down-to-earth explanation is that the entity is the cartographic equivalent of a watermark, allowing the mapmaker to tell if his work has been pirated, but no doubt there are other possibilities. Dr Maria Seton, fresh from a fruitless month on the waves, insists she plans to "follow up and find out."

Forget the vampire movies and the link between lunar phases and the incidence of psychological problems. New research from France?s Universit? Laval debunks the popular notion that moon stages influence mental health.
Researchers directed by psychologist Dr. Genevi?ve Belleville examined the relationship between the moon?s phases and the number of patients who show up at hospital emergency rooms experiencing psychological problems.
The investigators evaluated patients who visited emergency rooms at Montreal?s Sacr?-Coeur Hospital and H?tel-Dieu de L?vis between March 2005 and April 2008.
They focused specifically on 771 individuals who showed up at the emergency room with chest pains for which no medical cause could be determined. Psychological evaluations revealed that a sizable number of these patients suffered from panic attacks, anxiety and mood disorders, or suicidal thoughts.
Using lunar calendars, the researchers determined the moon phase in which each of these visits occurred.
Analyses revealed no link between the incidence of psychological problems and the four lunar phases. There was one exception, however; anxiety disorders were 32 percent less frequent during the last lunar quarter.
?This may be coincidental or due to factors we did not take into account,? suggested Genevi?ve Belleville. ?But one thing is certain: we observed no full-moon or new-moon effect on psychological problems.?
This study?s conclusions run contrary to 80 percent of nurses and 64 percent of doctors who were convinced that the lunar cycle affects patients? mental health.
Previous research has also found no association with the lunar phase and suicide, psychiatric admissions to a hospital, calls to a crisis center, domestic violence, or violent crimes. In other words, the idea that a full moon is associated with greater abnormal behavior is simply an urban legend.
?We hope our results will encourage health professionals to put that idea to rest,? said?Belleville. ?Otherwise, this misperception could, on the one hand, color their judgment during the full moon phase; or, on the other hand, make them less attentive to psychological problems that surface during the remainder of the month.?
Details on the study can be found on the website of the journal General Hospital Psychiatry.

Senator-elect Ted Cruz, R-Texas, appeared on "On the Record," and had a conversation with the show's host, Greta Van Susteren, on a variety of subjects, including immigration, the economy, and the Republican Party's difficulty getting Hispanic votes.
Cruz reiterates his views on fixing the economy
During his appearance, Cruz restated his views on how the moribund American economy might be fixed. His prescription including cutting spending and the debt, reforming taxes and regulations, all of which he says will help foster economic growth and thus get people back to work.
Cruz: Senate Democrats are being irresponsible
Cruz went on to accuse Senate Democrats, especially Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, of being irresponsible. The Senate, under Democratic control, has not passed an actual budget in years. This, in Cruz's view, has led to profligate spending.
Cruz on immigration and Hispanic outreach
Cruz expressed the belief that Republican problems attracting more Hispanic voters is a matter of communication and tone. He believes that American Hispanics are a natural conservative voting bloc, but have been turned off of the GOP due to its rhetoric on the immigration issue. He notes that the economy and jobs are polled as being more important to Hispanics than immigration and that one in 10 Hispanic households own small businesses. He also noted that while Democrats have been able to elect Hispanics as mayors or members of the House, they have a difficulty electing them to statewide offices. Susanna Martinez and Brian Sandoval, both governors, and Marco Rubio and Cruz himself, both Senators, are examples of Republican Hispanics who have been elected to statewide offices, thus exhibiting a broad appeal.
Cruz seen as an example of tea party strength
Policymic suggests that Cruz's victory over an establishment Republican, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, in the Republican primaries in Texas represents the continuing strength of the tea party. The piece suggests that Cruz's victory could serve as a model for Republican, tea party-supported Hispanics running in other races.
Hispanic vote went to Barack Obama
Fox News Latino suggests that the Hispanic vote went overwhelmingly to Barack Obama because the Democrats succeeded in painting the Republicans and Mitt Romney as being hostile to immigrants and Hispanics. Romney had taken a hard line on immigration as a means to appeal to the conservative base. His attempt to woo Hispanics on economic issues seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Obama won the Hispanic vote 72 percent to 23 percent, which may have also contributed to the Democrats retaining control of the Senate.

Ground won?t be broken on a new stadium in L.A. until a team is lined up to play there.? And once it?s known that a team will be playing there, it means that the team will have a hard time continuing to play in the ?there? that they?ll be abandoning.
So a temporary home in Los Angeles will be needed.? And it?s looking like that place will be the Rose Bowl.
According to the Pasadena Sun (via SportsBusiness Daily), the powers-that-be in that Southern California city voted on Tuesday to allow an expansion of the permissible number of annual events at the Rose Bowl from 12 to 25.? After a five-hour meeting that included plenty of citizens who complained about the traffic, noise, and other drawbacks to hosting NFL games, Pasadena City Council voted 7-1 to approve the increase for up to five years.
?We have a fiduciary responsibility to the whole city to take the next step,? Councilwoman Margaret McAustin said.?? I?m not excited about the NFL, and clearly [the Rose Bowl?s neighbors] are not excited, but it?s the responsible thing to do.?
Six years ago, a divided council blocked by one vote the possibility of the Rose Bowl providing a permanent home for an NFL team.? ?[T]his is different,? Councilman Steve Madison said. ?This is a temporary matter when we have dire financial needs.?
Currently, the Rose Bowl hosts UCLA home games and, yes, the Rose Bowl.
The addition of 13 events and not 12 adds a little potential intrigue to the move.? With the NFL?s current scheduling formula putting the maximum number of home games in any given season at 12, the expansion to 13 hints at either a Super Bowl or an extra home game that would come from expanding the regular season to 18 games and keeping the preseason at four.
The more likely (but far less interesting) explanation is that some NFL regular seasons finish in early January, which could result in a maximum of 13 regular-season games played in a given stadium in a full calendar year, if the next regular season finishes in December.
Either way, the foundation has been put in place for L.A. to house a team temporarily, while it?s permanent house is being built.
The biggest problem for the NFL could be coming up with a way to relax the blackout rule, given that it will be a tall order to fill the continuous bowl to its 92,000-seat capacity on a consistent basis.

TORONTO (AP) ? John Gibbons was hired as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays for the second time Tuesday, returning to a team that just invigorated its roster after a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins.
"I never would have guessed this could happen," he said at a news conference.
Gibbons managed Toronto 2004-2008 and had a 305-305 record, making him the third winningest manager in franchise history.
He succeeds John Farrell, who spurned Toronto for his dream managing job in Boston. Gibbons, however, takes over a very different team from the one Farrell managed.
The surprise announcement came a day after the Blue Jays completed a mega deal in which they acquired All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle from Miami. Toronto agreed to the trade last week and Commissioner Bud Selig approved it Monday. The Blue Jays, extraordinarily busy in this offseason, also announced the signing of free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera.
"Who wouldn't want to be here?" Gibbons said. "The front office has put together a legitimate contending type team."
Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos had said he wanted someone who was familiar with the organization and city. Anthopolous was an assistant GM when Gibbons managed Toronto. Gibbons joins Cito Gaston as managers serving two stints with the Blue Jays.
His best season was in 2006, when Toronto went 87-75 to finish second in the division ? the same season he had a well-publicized blowup with players Shea Hillenbrand Ted Lilly.
Gibbons most recently managed the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League (AA) in the San Diego Padres' organization last season. He also had three seasons as the Kansas City Royals' bench coach.
Gibbons joined the Blue Jays' coaching staff in 2002 as a bullpen catcher and was promoted midseason to first base coach. He served in that capacity until replacing Carlos Tosca in 2004. Before joining the Blue Jays the first time, Gibbons spent 11 seasons working with the New York Mets.
A World Where Grades Will Be Left Behind In celebration of its 30th anniversary, USA TODAY interviewed some of the USA's greatest visionaries to talk about the world of tomorrow. Mary Beth Marklein published the article "A World Where Grades Will Be Left Behind" to discuss just what the title implies: what would the world be like if there were no grades? In the article, USA TODAY interviewed Sebastian Thrun, a Google Vice President and Stanford research professor best known for his role in building Google's driverless car. Thrun's idea of an educational reform is described in his version of learning, which he says can be made free and available to anyone who wants it. Thrun is the owner of Udacity, which is an education company based in California that provides a higher education for free. Udacity's goal is to offer a university-level education of high quality and low cost. Using the economics of the Internet, they claim to have connected some of the greatest teachers to hundreds of thousands of students all over the world. In Thrun's version of education, he explains a few key concepts: no one will be late for class, failure is not an option, and lessons are made to look like games, such as the popular physics-based puzzle game "Angry Birds." The whole vision of Udacity came to Thrun after he had the opportunity to teach a free online artificial-intelligence course that drew more than 160,000 students. This experience was so profound to him that he announced he no longer could teach in a traditional Stanford classroom. Thus, Udacity was born, and Thrun began his mission to revolutionize education. He made reference to the concept of "flipping the classroom," which occurs when students watch a video at home and come to class ready with questions to be answered by the teacher. Thrun explains how both online learning and flipping the classroom are made possible through technology, and because of these two concepts, classes will involve a sequence of increasingly more challenging exercises and quizzes aimed at helping students master a particular concept or skill. Thrun calls grades "the failure of the education system," so therefore, he intends to eliminate them completely. Instead, students will take as much or as little time as they need to demonstrate mastery of a particular skill or concept. This type of online education will be free, but related services may involve a fee. All in all, Thrun hopes to democratize education through technology. As I was reading this article, the message Mr. Thrun described seemed really cool and much more innovative than the education we see in many classrooms today. As I thought about it and looked at it more closely though, this type of educational reform raises a sense of skepticism. Yes, a free education where you get to play games on the Internet and learn at your own pace sounds great, but in reality, is this concept of education truly possible to the magnitude in which Mr. Thrun described? I have my doubts. The first item on his list that seems out of reach is the free part. If the top, most sought-out professors from all around the world are being called upon to teach these online classes, how does the Udacity team plan on paying them a salary? As a future teacher, I'm all about teaching my students because I truly want them to learn and grow, but in reality, I will be seeking a paycheck as well. I'm sure many of the professors Udacity has confronted feel the same way. I understand the students would be charged fees every once and a while, but simple fees would not be enough to pay for the numerous things this operation would call for: the high-tech computers and software that would be needed, the team working on these computers and programs, and as I mentioned earlier, the professors teaching the courses. "Free" sounds great (especially to myself, a poor college kid), but when it comes down to crunching the numbers, money speaks rather loudly. The next item on the list that raises concerns for me is the fact that "a single class might enroll tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of students." I guess this sounds so bizarre to me because I personally like one-on-one contact and time with my teacher. If there are this many people in a single class, how is an instructor suppose to keep up with everything the students are doing? I understand Mr. Thrun's goal is to create an education that will respond to each individual student, but with that many students, I have my doubts. The third item I'd like to talk about is the "no more grades" idea. As a college student myself, this sounds wonderful. As long as I'm understanding the material and learning at my own pace, what do grades matter anyway? Well, as much as I hate to admit it, I think grades, or rather some kind of assessment, is needed. I'm all for students being able to take the time necessary to master concepts and skills, but without some form of assessment, I think students lose some of the responsibility needed to become successful. I don't necessarily think the "A, B, C, D, F" system is the only or best solution for assessment out there, but I do believe teachers should provide students with feedback on how they are progressing in a given class. Normally, that feedback comes through assessment.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Mary Beth Marklein's article in USA TODAY because it brought up some really neat ideas for the future of education. Though I don't totally agree with everything Mr. Sebastian Thrun is advocating with the online learning society created by Udacity, I still think he offered up interesting and innovative ideas. I just believe a few things need to be tweaked to make them more realistic and doable. One thing Mr. Thrun and I most certainly agree on is how important technology is for the future and progression of education and for the way we teach our students.

Our phones are fast becoming the ATM of health. That?s the upshot from the Pew Mobile Health 2012 report.
Some 85?percent of American adults own a cell phone today, and 31 percent of them turn to their phones for health or medical information, up from 17 percent since this study was last conducted in 2010.
The figures are even rosier with smartphone owners. The survey found that 45 percent of all Americans own a smartphone, with 52 percent of them using it for health reasons ? no doubt because accessing, viewing and sharing are all easier with a smartphone.
Texting about health care not popular
The numbers aren?t universally ticking upward, though. Despite text messages improving health in emerging countries, texting isn?t seeing broad use among American cell phone owners.
Among the 80 percent of us who text, only 9 percent of smartphone users and 6 percent of all cell phone owners receive texts about medical or health issues. there?s a similar pattern with app downloads and use. Among the 84 percent of smartphone owners who?ve downloaded an app, only 19 percent have downloaded an app to manage or improve their health. The most popular health apps continue to be exercise, diet and weight apps.
Something interesting happens, however, when you look only at those who are sick, making a big health change or caring for someone who is.
Caregivers, people with chronic conditions, and people facing a medical crisis or a significant medical change, such as weight loss or quitting cigarettes, are more likely to use their phones to look for health information, receive health information via text message and download health apps.
Target areas to communication about
Many employers are aware that mobile technology offers them a new channel for health promotion. In the 2012 Technology + Employee Wellness survey,?my company, Context, administered with Shapeup, we asked employers about their use of mobile solutions such as text, apps and even mobile-optimized content. Only 17 percent of respondents currently use any, but 56 percent are considering doing so.
Those who are using mobile solutions or plan to do so identify these target areas:
General health communication ? 66 percent;
Physical activity ? 59 percent;
Weight management ? 45 percent;
Health coaching ? 39 percent;
Tobacco cessation support ? 30 percent; and,
Condition management ? 29 percent.
Employers may wish to reevaluate their targeted areas of use, considering Pew?s findings that people engage more with mobile technologies during health crises and major changes. The 26 percent of our survey respondents who currently have no plans to integrate mobile solutions into their health promotion strategies may wish to reevaluate their position too.
As the Pew findings show, employees are ready and waiting.

One of the biggest challenges every entrepreneur will face is building a brand.
Your goal is to set your company and brand apart from the crowd. If you form a branding strategy without conducting research, your brand will barely make a blip on your consumer?s radar. Given the fast pace that industries move at today, brands are easily forgotten and most brands are hard to remember in the first place.
Branding is a challenge that inevitably you?ll spend years perfecting. Don?t be scared to try new things, but remember to shape your brand based on the vision of your company and initial successes that have defined your brand.
When HootSuite was first branded as a premier social media management tool for small businesses and multi-national enterprises, our focus was on four specific high-level areas ? pillars that, over the past several years, have helped us build HootSuite from a startup to a successful international company:
1. Product
A solid product offering is vital to the success of your brand.
If your product amazes customers, and is revolutionary and bulletproof, customers will evangelize for you. If your product offering is still in its early stages, customers will be the ones to help you innovate and grow by offering essential feedback.
Social media is a great way to gather unbiased feedback. Use tools to monitor brand mentions, messages, blog posts, and even misspellings of your brand name.
Not all customer feedback will be positive. But take the negative feedback and use it to your advantage. You?ll learn more from what people don?t like about your product than from what they do like about it. Develop an online support system that gives your consumers a place to vent and use it as an incubation center for ideas and future product developments.
2. Community
Your small business is a part of a community, whether you realize it or not.
It?s important to embrace your community and thoughtfully engage within it as a community leader. By creating insightful content people want to read or share and speaking at industry engagements, you can shape your personal brand within your community.
3. Team
In the early stages of business development, your team is often your biggest source for recruiting top talent. New hires represent your brand within your community. They can become the foundation your company is built upon.
However, establishing a team that represents both you and your brand doesn?t happen overnight. You want to create a company culture where everyone can work toward a common goal. It helps to cultivate a connected company culture that attracts like-minded talent. From an industry perspective it also shows that your company is capable of developing its own social system and recruiting strategies.
NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are sharply higher at midday on Wall Street.
The Dow Jones industrial average is up 154 points at 12,743. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 20 at 1,380. And the Nasdaq composite index is up 44 points at 2,897.
Some investors are expressing optimism about a deal in Washington to avoid the tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1. Investors are also encouraged by earnings reports from Lowe's and Tyson Foods.
Energy stocks are among the best performers in the market. The price of crude oil is up more than $2 a barrel, partly because of the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas.
