The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team will begin the 2013 season ranked 18th in the NAIA Baseball Coaches? Preseason Top 25 poll, the national office announced recently.
The Warhawks earned 208 points in the rankings, just one point behind Bellevue (Neb.).
Defending national champions Tennessee Wesleyan earned 17 first-place votes and 528 total points en route to the top spot in the poll, while LSU-Shreveport was ranked second. Southern States Athletic Conference rival Lee was third with 493 points, followed by Oklahoma City and Rogers State (Okla.), respectively.
The SSAC ranked second in the rankings with three teams ranked, as the Warhawks were joined by the Flames and No. 9 Faulkner. The Sooner Conference paced all leagues with four ranked teams.
The Warhawks finished 38-24 last season, but lost 17 seniors from that squad. However, AUM returns several key position players in senior ouftfielders Shane Turner and Carson Amick, as well as senior infielders Wes Hughes and Branden Kelley. The Warhawks also return three significant contributors on the mound in seniors Will Ruffin, Blake Woo and Eran Franks.
AUM opens its 2013 campaign on Saturday, February 2, when it hosts Lindsey Wilson in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
