A Rosella parrotDue to the fact that in many cases, we don?t have the necessary amount of time to take care of a dog or a cat, and to keep them as pets, the pet birds can represent a backup solution. That is why this article will talk about one of the bird species, namely the Rosella parrots. We will find out about their origins and about the way in which they need to be taken care of, in order to have them for a long period of time. Compared to the gorgeous Ara parrot, this is a more accessible solution, both from the financial point of view and from the point of view of the required space.

The specimens belonging to this species can also reach large sizes, but opposed to the Ara parrots, those belonging to the Rosella species stop growing when they reach a length of 12, 5 inches. They are very brightly colored, having red feathers on the head and chest, yellow belly and a black back with blue edges. These Rosella parrots don?t have ??colors in their cheeks??, because the feathers covering them are white. Originating from Australia, they are used to living in flocks, retreating only when they have to mate. They can live up to 15 years (but there can also be some specimens that will live up to 30 years), and they are excellent flyers.

What recommends them as pet birds? First of all, the fact that the Rosella parrot is a docile and cheerful bird, which is easier to tame than most of the parrots, if the owner proves to be patient. In some cases, it will also learn how to speak, entertaining the children. However, they are not very endearing, and they sometimes tend to be aggressive. After they are bought and brought into a new environment, they may be shy at the beginning, but they will eventually adapt to the new conditions. They are dashing birds and they have, opposed to some other birds, a pleasant tweet. If a male is cheerful, it will sing a pleasant song for a long period of time. It is not very indicated for the males to be held together in a cage, even if they belong to the same species. They tend to be aggressive especially during the times when they have to mate. An advantage of having them is the fact that the parrots that belong to the Rosella species don?t tend to chew the wood like other species do, so they can be left without care to fly freely in the apartment, especially because? their flight is so spectacular, emphasizing their colorful plumage.

Like in the case of the Ara parrots, it is very important that we understand the significance of the sounds they make. They emit a warning sound when they feel in danger and a different sound when the males meet and fight. What should we feed the Rosella parrots in order to keep them healthy? To an adult bird we can offer sunflower seeds, millet, wheat, oats, and hemp. Also all these seeds can be left to germinate and then given to the birds twice a week. Besides the seeds, which constitute the basic type of food, it is indicated to feed the birds with egg shells (which are important for their calcium intake), bread soaked in milk mixed with grated carrot (also for their calcium and vitamins intake) and underbrush dehydrated fruits.

Also, their alimentation should not lack greens (like dandelion, clover, spinach, carrot salad and even carrot leaves). Also, they won?t refuse some fruits (like cherries, grapes, apples) or boiled potatoes. Although it may seem strange, it is recommended to give them twice a week branches of softwood, such as maple, poplar and willow, in order to satisfy their need of chewing. The proper way of taking care of these birds implies a concern for the water they drink. That water must be changed at least once a day. You can also add some soluble vitamins in it. Rosella parrotIf the birds will get seek, it is recommended to dissolve some drugs in their water (especially antibiotics), in order to be effective.

For the bird?s convenience, it is important that during the hot season they have a pot of water where they can bath. The Rosella parrots are great bath lovers. The water layer can reach 5 centimeters, and that water must also be changed as often as possible. It is not indicated to let them bath during the cold seasons.

If they are taken care of in a proper way, and if they are healthy, they can also breed in captivity, the only conditions being the fact that they should be over the age of 2 years old and they should live in a bird house. The best period for breeding is during the spring time. Because we talked about breeding, we must mention the fact that it is not very easy to establish the sex of the birds. If we talk about a female, its feathers should not be brightly colored, and they can also have as a distinctive mark a white stripe under the wings. However, this aspect is not valid in all the cases, so it should not be taken very seriously into consideration. If you are not already the owner of some pet birds, maybe this article convinced you to buy a pair of Rosella parrots. You will for sure be very delighted.
