BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? Thousands of Protestants marched peacefully through the heart of Northern Ireland's capital Saturday amid a heavy security presence.

It was one of Belfast's biggest parades in years, and police were deployed in large numbers to prevent street clashes between marchers and Northern Ireland's Catholic minority.

Members of the various Protestant "loyal orders," so-called because they're loyal to Great Britain, trooped down Belfast's streets festooned with buttons, tassels and other ceremonial gear. The marchers banged drums and played music as they walked the six-mile (nine-kilometer) route from the capital's City Hall to Stormont, the seat of Northern Ireland's parliament.

Parade-goers carried the orange collarette, a small V-shaped sash worn around the neck. Many also came in the stern-looking dark sunglasses, black bowler caps and white gloves that have become synonymous with the marches.

At least two women chose a more relaxed uniform: Red-white-and-blue wigs and Union Jack dresses.

The loud and colorful marches date back to the 19th century, and are a longstanding irritant between Northern Ireland's two main religious communities. The loyal orders see them as expressions of their culture and a testament to their faith. Many Catholics see them as aggressive and anti-Irish, and the marches can devolve into street fights, particularly when they pass through heavily Catholic areas.

There were no immediate reports of any unrest, and marchers passed a potential flashpoint on the parade route ? St. Patrick's church near Belfast's city center ? without incident.

"They marched with dignity down the road," Father Michael Sheehan, the administrator of St Patrick's, said. "I think a degree of respect was shown that hasn't been shown before."

Nearly every aspect of the marches ? from the parade route to the music played ? is argued over and litigated by both sides, and a specially-created Parades Commission has been created to mediate between the two. The commission can, for example, re-route a parade around a potential flashpoint or demand that sectarian songs not be sung in certain areas.

The marches are steeped in Northern Ireland's messy history, and Saturday's parade, which had been expected to draw up to 30,000 people, is no different. The march finished at Stormont, with a cultural festival held to commemorate a 1912 proclamation against plans for home rule in Ireland.

Crowd estimates were not immediately available.

Can Florida?s Medicaid reform plan be the model for the nation?

Quietly, over the past six years, an experiment in providing healthcare for the poor has been playing out in Broward and four other counties around the state. Its basic goal is to relieve the financial pressures of Medicaid on Florida?s taxpayers by turning over poor and disabled patients to private companies, a move lawmakers believe will cut costs.

Conservatives love the Medicaid reform program, pointing to an in-depth University of Florida study indicating that the experiment has lowered costs while not raising consumer complaints. The Legislature has already approved a slightly modified model of the reform to go statewide. At least one national think tank believes it should be a model for the entire country.

Liberals decry the effort as a way to build corporate profits at the expense of the poor. Howard Mallinger, a Sunrise retiree, thinks they?re right. He has two adult sons with mental health problems who are in a Medicaid health maintenance organization. The HMO frequently won?t provide their medications, or is slow to approve them, causing their health issues to spiral out of control, Mallinger says.

One son has been involuntarily committed under Florida?s Baker Act 44 times in the past five years, he says. That often means expensive three-day hospital confinements. ?The joke is on the taxpayer,? Mallinger says.

With state taxpayers spending $21 billion a year on Medicaid and 3.2 million Floridians depending on it for their care, including 270,000 in Broward, the stakes are huge. The UF research shows the pilot has saved the state about $100?million a year, and Florida?s leaders are determined to take the HMO-style reform statewide as early as 2014.

But three serious problems with the pilot could threaten the plan?s statewide success:

??R. Paul Duncan, the professor who led the much-discussed UF study, says he has yet to answer one crucial question: Does the new system cost less because insurers are providing more efficient care or are they simply giving patients less care?

?That is a very big deal,? he says.

Though discussion of the pilot focuses almost entirely on for-profit HMOs, two of the biggest and most successful groups in the program are nonprofit provider service networks (PSNs) paid on the traditional fee-for-service basis that the state is trying to abolish.

??Many hospitals love the pilot, saying they?re satisfied with the payments they receive. But many doctors hate it, citing complaints from their patients and their own low reimbursement rates. The conservative Florida Medical Association, which represents the state?s doctors, adamantly opposes the statewide expansion.

??The presidential election is likely to play a role as well, since the federal government provides more than half the funding for Medicaid. The Republican platform favors letting states do what they want with Medicaid, while the Obama administration is likely to demand major changes before allowing the pilot to go statewide.

Taxpayers? problem

In the last 12 years, Florida?s Medicaid program has grown five times faster than general revenue. It now consumes 30 percent of the state?s budget and keeps growing.

?Medicaid has commandeered the state budget and crowds out our ability to fund other worthwhile priorities, such as our colleges and universities, public safety and transportation,? complains Sen. Joe Negron, R-Palm City.

A Career In Consulting Helped Prepare Young Entrepreneur To ...

Diana Goodwin says that times are changing: Student underemployment has been on the rise for years, alongside an increasingly competitive job market. It is no surprise that new graduates today are exploring less conventional career options.

With a commerce degree from the University of Toronto, Diana was able to successfully secure prestigious consultant position at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm, after graduating in 2007.

As an ex-swim instructor, however, Diana also spent a lot of time thinking about the fact that most children weren?t getting the attention they needed in large community swimming classes and that, with today?s hectic lifestyle, parents were looking for a more convenient option to teach their kids who to swim.

Her business ? AquaMobile Swim School ? was born.?She was determined to create a swim school that provided high-quality individualized swimming lessons to students in the comfort and convenience of their own homes.

At first, it was something she was doing casually while working full-time at Bain.??I was doing it on the side,? she says. ?I only had time to put in a couple hours a week to grow the business.?

Those few hours proved to be enough to convince Diana ? she decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship based on what she enjoyed most.?Diana says she has no regrets about the time she spent at Bain, though.??If I were to do it over again, I would do exactly the same path of working in consulting before I?d do my own thing. 100%.?

She asserts, ?There are still a lot of skills you can learn in a traditional corporate job, a lot of connections you can make, and it brings in the money. If you?re starting [a business] right away, you?re not going to have that money.?

From there, she entered the MBA program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Illinois, where she made the final push to make her dreams become a reality.

?While I was at business school, I worked hard on developing a robust business plan so that I could take AquaMobile to the next level once I graduated,? she says. She received her MBA in 2011.

For most new graduates, however, A-list business schools may be out of reach.? Regardless of educational background, Diana?s biggest piece of advice for new graduates who want to pursue a career in entrepreneurship is: focus.

?Once you have an idea that you are passionate about, it?s important to focus on it and go for it,? Diana says.

?If you are being pulled in many different directions and working on developing multiple ventures, you will never be able to make one idea succeed because your attention is being split too many ways.?

Diana also emphasizes the importance of starting early, specifically, when it comes to networking.

?Go out there and start building your network. It?s really important and it?s something that people don?t necessarily do a good job of doing until they need something,? she says.??Just start getting involved in things. I?ve learned so much by getting involved in my community. You never know who can help you several years down the road.?

While Diana is a strong advocate for pursuing her passions, she is also an ardent believer in being practical and proactive. She encourages taking action whether it?s starting a business part-time or joining organizations with people who share the same vision.

?Depending on what type of venture it is, it may be something that can be done part-time while working full-time,? she says.

?I hear a lot of new grads who want to do something entrepreneurial, but they don?t have an idea. Maybe it?s getting together once a week with a group of like-minded friends where you can bounce ideas off each other. Brainstorming gets that creativity going and that?s what spurs ideas. If you sit around and wait, chances are it?s not going to come to you. Plan some time, start thinking about that idea, and work with the right people,? Diana affirms.

?Go for it.?

• Focus. Choose one idea and go for it. Don?t get distracted along the way.
• Start young. Build your network.
• Start now. Start something part-time and surround yourself with like-minded people.

World Premiere of Mitsubishi Motors' Outlander PHEV with State-of-the-Art Plug-in Hybrid EV System at 2012 Paris Motor Show

Tokyo, September 5, 2012 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will present the global debut of the new Outlander PHEV at the 2012 Paris Motor Show (or "Mondial de L' Automobile 2012") held from Thursday, September 27th through Sunday, October 14th*1. The Outlander PHEV uses the Plug-in Hybrid EV System powertrain developed by MMC and derived from its lineup of all-electric models.

Outlander PHEV is the world's first plug-in hybrid SUV and offers the best of three worlds: the environmental performance of an electric vehicle (EV), the cruising range of a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, and the on- and off-road performance of an SUV. MMC is due to bring Outlander PHEV to market first in Japan early in 2013.

Alongside the Outlander PHEV, MMC will be displaying a total of 11 vehicles (seven on press days) on its stand at the Paris Motor Show, including: the new European version of MMC's global compact car (called Mirage in other countries) which makes its debut; the ASX compact crossover which has been refreshed for the 2013 model year; and a display model of the i-MiEV Evolution 100% electric racecar which took part in the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held in the United States in August.

1. New Outlander PHEV

The new Outlander PHEV, to be unveiled for the first time at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, is based on the new Outlander which first debuted in Russia in July and is to be introduced in other European markets starting from September. The Outlander PHEV uses MMC's own Plug-in Hybrid EV System powertrain derived from 100% electric systems used on the i-MiEV and other MMC all-electric vehicles. The Outlander PHEV is the world's first plug-in hybrid SUV, and brings together the environmental performance and quietness that distinguish EVs while delivering the utility and on- and off-road performance associated with 4WD sport utility vehicles and the cruising range of a conventional ICE-powered vehicle.

Targeting the mid-size category and above, which require extended cruising range, the Outlander PHEV's Plug-in Hybrid EV System fuses together the EV technologies proven on MMC's i-MiEV - the pioneering 100%-electric car brought to market in 2009 - with the very latest ICE environmental technologies, including MMC's MIVEC*2 variable valve timing system. Employing electrical power stored in the drive battery by charging either at home, a charging station or when the system recovers energy when decelerating, the Plug-in Hybrid EV System gives the Outlander PHEV gasoline-sipping performance, with a target combined fuel efficiency*3 in excess of 61 km/liter, greatly superior to that of vehicles powered by a conventional engine, and a cruising range in excess of 880 km, which is on a par with a conventional ICE-powered car.

*3: Representative fuel efficiency figure based on a combination of the vehicle's fuel consumption when driven in all-electric mode, called the plug-in fuel efficiency, and when driven in hybrid mode, called the hybrid fuel efficiency (measured via Japan's JC08 mode)

MMC will introduce Outlander PHEV in the Japanese market in early 2013 then sequentially roll out the model in Europe, North America, and other markets around the world. Some major features are introduced below.

1) Automatic Selection of Three Drive Modes for Optimal Efficiency

Depending on driving conditions and remaining battery charge, the Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain automatically selects the optimum drive mode (see below) for comfortable driving while providing superior fuel efficiency.
a) EV Drive Mode
EV Drive Mode is an all-electric mode in which the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electricity from the drive battery. With zero on-road gasoline consumption and zero CO2 emissions the driver can enjoy quiet and very eco-friendly performance in this mode.
b) Series Hybrid Mode
In Series Hybrid Mode the gasoline engine operates as a generator supplying electricity to the electric motors. The system switches to this mode when the remaining charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level and when more powerful performance is required, such as accelerating to pass a vehicle or climbing a steep gradient such as a slope.
c) Parallel Hybrid Mode
In Parallel Hybrid Mode the gasoline engine provides most of the motive power, assisted by the electric motors as required. The system switches to this mode for higher-speed driving when the gasoline engine operates at peak efficiency.

2) High-capacity Drive Battery Offers Driving Versatility

The high-capacity 12 kWh lithium-ion drive battery gives Outlander PHEV an EV Drive Mode cruising range of over 55 km (JC08 mode*4), sufficient for all-electric operation in most everyday situations*5.
The driver can also manually switch to Battery Charge Mode in which the gasoline engine acts as a generator and charges the drive battery whether the vehicle is stationary or on the move. Battery Charge Mode gives the driver the flexibility to use the gasoline engine as a generator at any time they want; for example if the driver wants to use EV Drive Mode at a specific time, they can make sure the drive battery has enough energy for that time.
*4: An official method of measuring vehicle fuel consumption introduced by the Japanese government.
*5: "Most everyday situations" is based on a JCAP (Japan Clean Air Program) study conducted in Japan which showed that on average, 85% of Japanese drivers drove less than 55km per day.

3) Twin Motor 4WD System Provides Superior Response

The Outlander PHEV uses a Twin Motor 4WD system comprising independent electric motors to drive the front and rear wheels. In addition to decreased friction loss Twin Motor 4WD delivers better response and finer control than conventional mechanical systems. It accomplishes this without a propeller shaft or other mechanical components seen in conventional mechanical systems. The Twin Motor 4WD system is integrated with Mitsubishi's well-proven S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system to deliver high levels of stability and all-terrain performance and ensure the vehicle behaves just as the driver intends it to.
In addition, the front and rear electric motors generate maximum torque immediately, an inherent characteristic of electric motors, giving acceleration comparable to that of a vehicle powered by a large displacement high-output ICE and allowing Outlander PHEV to deliver superior levels of environmental and driving performance.

2. European version of new global compact car

The European version of MMC's new global compact car (Mirage in other regions) is a compact car developed focusing on high fuel efficiency, affordability and compactness - the universally recognized values sought in a compact car- and which meets the needs both of an "eco-car" for advanced countries and of an entry-level car for emerging countries.
Following its March 2012 debut in Thailand, where it is being produced, the new global compact car has been introduced in ASEAN countries and in Japan to high acclaim from customers. The new model is due to be rolled out all over the globe, next in Europe, Australia, and other markets. Introduction in Europe is slated for February 2013.

Against a backdrop of ever-more stringent CO2 emission regulations, demand for "eco-cars" is growing in Europe. The European version of the new global compact car delivers CO2 emissions of only 92 g/km (1.0-liter 3-cylinder MIVEC engine with 5-speed manual transmission version). The European version of the new global compact car achieves this through the use of environmental performance-increasing methods including exhaustive weight reduction (845kg, 3710mm long, 1665mm wide), aerodynamic drag reduction (CD of 0.27, measured in-house), the use of an all-new 1.0L three-cylinder MIVEC engine, along with the adoption of Mitsubishi's own Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) idling stop system. With its compact body dimensions the European version of the new global compact car delivers easy-to-drive maneuverability and peppy performance while at the same time maximizing interior occupant space through its high-efficiency packaging.

3. Other models

1) 2013 ASX (European version)

The ASX is a compact crossover launched in European markets in May 2010 and is proving popular for its quality and sporty exterior and interior design as well as for its outstanding motive and environmental performance.
After undergoing a number of subtle changes mainly on the exterior, the 2013 ASX is due to be released sporting a more refined and high-quality design this autumn.

2) i-MiEV Evolution

The i-MiEV Evolution is a 100% electric racecar which uses the same motor, drive battery and other major components as the production i-MiEV but with a race body designed to reduce weight and deliver maximum aerodynamic performance. Comprising a single motor driving the front wheels and two motors driving the rear wheels the car's electric 4WD powertrain delivers superior motive performance and outstanding handling and stability.
Entering for the first time, i-MiEV finished second in the Electric Division of the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held last month in the United States. Participation in the event allowed MMC to collect valuable data and knowhow that will be applied in the development of future models featuring electric powertrains or electric/ICE hybrid powertrains.

3) MiEV House

Also on display at the Paris Motor Show will be the MiEV House which was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show last year and the Geneva Motor Show this March.
Starring the i-MiEV, the MiEV House is a demonstration of how recycled drive batteries and other EV components, as well as solar panels and electricity charging stations can be used to maximize the efficient use of domestic energy. It is an example of the application of an EV in an integrated renewable energy system which couples a Home Energy Management System (HEMS).
With HEMS monitoring and regulating household and EV power usage in combination with auxiliary battery-stored energy and renewable energy from solar panels, energy usage efficiency is maximized to lower power consumption without interrupting normal household power usage.

Mayweather, Pacquiao settling defamation case

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have agreed to settle a federal defamation case in Las Vegas, according to a lawyer involved in the case, a move that avoids trial and clears a key hurdle to a long-awaited bout between two top fighters who've traded verbal jabs for years but have never met in the ring.

Terms of the deal are confidential, Malcolm LaVergne, a lawyer representing Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s father in the case, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

LaVergne said the various parties to the case have signed documents to be filed under seal asking U.S. District Judge Larry R. Hicks to dismiss the case. He said others involved in the case were preparing a public statement.

"The matter has been resolved," LaVergne said. "Any alleged terms of the resolution would be strictly confidential. Floyd Mayweather Sr. is very happy that this lengthy case has finally come to a conclusion."

The judge last week ordered Floyd Mayweather Jr. to pay about $114,000 in legal fees and court costs for avoiding questioning under oath from Pacquiao's lawyers in the case.

Attorneys for Pacquiao earlier lost a bid to end the lawsuit with a more severe sanction ? a default judgment for Pacquiao.

LaVergne said Tuesday he had no information about whether the court settlement means Mayweather and Pacquiao will meet in the ring.

Mayweather's promoter, Leonard Ellerbe, and attorneys for the two fighters didn't immediately respond to messages from AP.

Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc., declined comment. His spokesman, Lee Samuels, said the company was not involved in the defamation case.

Pacquiao, 33, a member of Congress in the Philippines, filed the lawsuit in December 2009 in Las Vegas. He sought unspecified damages based on allegations that Mayweather defamed him by suggesting he used performance-enhancing substances. Pacquiao denied Mayweather's claim.

Pacquiao is 54-4 with two draws in 60 fights. He is due to fight Juan Manuel Marquez on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand Garden arena in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, 35, who goes by the nickname "Money," was serving two months of a three-month sentence in a Las Vegas jail on a domestic battery conviction when he was named by Forbes magazine this summer as the highest-paid athlete in the world for 2011. He is undefeated in 43 fights and was guaranteed $32 million for a May 5 bout where he defeated Miguel Cotto.

Suicide bomber kills 2, injures 45 in Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? A suicide car bomber attacked a Catholic church conducting Mass in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing two people and wounding another 45 in a region under assault by a radical Islamist sect, officials said.

"The situation has been brought under control," Stevens said. "We have our men minding all areas."

Stevens said no group or individual had claimed responsibility for the attack, though suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram. The sect, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has been waging an increasingly bloody fight against nation's weak central government. More than 680 people have died in drive-by killings and bombings blamed on Boko Haram this year alone, according to an AP count. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country.

The sect has used suicide car bombs against churches in the past, most noticeably a 2011 Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. The killing of members of the sect's senior leadership comes as the group recently changed some of its tactics and attacked more than 30 mobile phone towers throughout northern Nigeria, disrupting communications in a nation reliant on cellular phones.

Saturday night, the military conducted door-to-door searches in the northern cities of Damaturu and Potiskum, areas now under a 24-hour curfew that have been hard-hit by the sect.

WOODBRIDGE, Va.?President Barack Obama took another shot at Mitt Romney's suggestion that 47 percent of Americans have a "victim" mentality, casting his opponent as out of touch with the country.

"I don't believe we can get very far with leaders who write off half the nation as victims who will never take responsibility," Obama declared at a rally here.

The president also defended his suggestion before a Univision forum yesterday, in which he said he'd learned "you can't change Washington from the inside." Obama said that he meant the only real change comes from outside Washington?and mocked Romney for twisting his comments.

"My opponent got really excited. He stood up at a rally and proudly declared, 'I'll get the job done from the inside,'" Obama said. "What kind of inside job is he talking about? ... We don't want an inside job in Washington. We want change in Washington. ... That can't happen if you've written off half the country."

It was the second time in 24 hours that Obama took a shot at Romney's "47 percent" comment, which was captured in a hidden video of the Republican candidate speaking at a Florida fundraiser in May. The video, leaked to Mother Jones magazine, showed Romney saying that Obama's supporters?which he estimated to be about 47 percent of the country?view themselves as victims and are reliant on government handouts.

Romney has downplayed his comments, suggesting he was just talking about the political landscape of the race. During his appearance at the Univision forum, Romney insisted he was running to represent "100 percent of America."

But the GOP candidate's remarks have clearly given an opening to Obama, who wove in multiple references to the video throughout his appearance in Virginia, a hotly contested battleground state.

A Washington Post poll released earlier this week found Obama had significantly expanded his lead in the state, edging out Romney by 8 points?52 percent to 44 percent.

At least 11,000 people turned out to see the president here?spreading across the outfield of a minor-league baseball stadium. Echoing his speech at the Democratic National Convention, Obama repeatedly insisted he needed another term to accomplish the "change" he promised as a candidate in 2008.

"We've always said that change takes more than one term or even one president. It certainly takes more than one party," Obama said, insisting he would work with Republicans if they were willing.

Making yet another reference to Romney's "47 percent" remark, Obama acknowledged that half the country didn't vote for him four years ago?and that half the country might not support him again in November. But he explained he was not running "to create Democratic jobs or Republican jobs" but rather "American jobs," and that he wasn't running to improve circumstances in "blue states" versus "red states." Obama insisted he's running to represent all Americans?whether he wins someone's vote or not.

"I still believe we are not as divided as our politics suggest," Obama said. "I still believe we have more in common than the pundits tell us."

To his supporters, he added, "I still believe in you, and I'm asking you to keep believing in me."
